Peace and Security

Representative Conyers understands that ensuring the safety of our citizens is the most important task of government.

As critical as our military strength is to protecting American interests abroad, the use of military force should always be our final option, not our first.  We must always have an aggressive, proactive diplomatic presence in areas of potential conflict and seek to use our influence to avert conflict.  Putting our men and women in uniform in harm’s way should never be taken lightly or undertaken for the wrong reasons.

Representative Conyers opposed the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and he is actively working in Congress to prevent war with Iran.  American’s recent wars abroad have resulted in high costs, in both blood and treasure.  He believes that it is time to bring our troops home, cut spending on outdated Cold War-era weapons programs, and pursue nation building in Southeast Michigan.

As a strong supporter of Israel, Representative Conyers has worked hard to promote peace in the Middle East and ensure Israel’s lasting security.  Representative Conyers believes that Israel’s security can best be achieved through a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict that meets the core interests of both parties.

Representative Conyers is the founder of the Out of Afghanistan Caucus and is a member of the Congressional Progressive Caucus’ Peace and Security Taskforce.
