A Snapshot of Health Care in America
There is an incredibly compelling article in today's New York Times about a financial crisis that threatens to close Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta, GA. As Atlanta's only public hospital, Grady serves the majority of the region's uninsured and underinsured.
The article gives a snapshot of what the quality of health care is like for those who do not have adequate insurance and sadly, it is a picture that could be taken anywhere in America. The need for serious reform of our health care system grows greater by the minute.

DOES OBAMA SUPPORT "NOT FOR PROFIT" HEALTH CARE?
John,
HOW could you turn your back on issues like this, is beyond ANY explanation.
"You're man" doesn't hold the same truths as you, yet the one man who does is ABANDONED by you. Please parse it out.
The problem at Grady is endemic of the whole system.
STUDY: US health care ranks last in preventable deaths.
We foresaw conditions like this
some years back, when Hill-Burton was abandoned for the "For Profit" movement. A foretaste a few years back when DC General was forced to close by Katherine Graham and her coterie of "Gentrifiers." The FACT is that unless Hill-Burton is re-enacted, and something like single-payer enacted, this sort of thing is going to be repeated over and over again. The FACT is that the U.S. Health care system is broken beyond recall.and MUST be scrapped and a new system that gives a damn about the needs of the Public, instead of the desires of the plutocrats must be devised. Will it happen? It's a bloody cinch that Hillary's not going to do it; nor are ANY of the Republicans! Richardson or Biden might - and we all know where Kucinich stands - Obama hasn't said, but I think he's probably too much beholden to big PHARMA to do the necessary changing. Okay, kids, it is TIME to take matters into our own hands. Do the necessary research to find out what regimen of vitamins, minerals, and herbs are needed to keep us well and out of the hands of the doctors! We already know that we should avoid high-fructose corn syrup, Aspartame, MSG, and trans-fats, avoid white sugar and flour and purified salt (but get plenty of unpurified salt), and increase Iodine - also start eating strange things like wheat and barley greens and alfalfa. Frankly, if we can stay well, we'll save a LOT on medical bills! And don't forget weight-bearing and aerobic exercise. IF we ALL took our health into our own hands instead of relying on the Medical E$tabli$hment, we'd all be much better off. "Medicine" should ONLY deal with emergencies. The modern habit of Doctors inventing diseases so they can sell you expensive "Medicines" that make you sicker should come to a shrieking halt!
So right Max
The statements of policy about health care and the presidential candidates being peddled by the Democrats certainly do seem to be incongruous, eh?
How does one resolve such an issue without changing your endorsed candidate(s) or your position on health care, or both? If one doesn't, then they are merely blowing smoke, no?
Why have you forsaken us?
"Not for profit" health care ... ABANDONED!
Out of Iraq ... ABANDONED!
Impeachment ... ABANDONED!
H.R. 1955 ... ABANDONED!
Electronic vote fraud ... ABANDONED!
WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON HERE?
WHY ARE YOU ABANDONING YOUR PRINCIPLES?
WHAT DO YOU EXCHANGE THEM FOR, JOHN?
Why?
Because we refuse to accept that supporting a man who only receives 1% of the vote, allows him to call us fringoid wackos.
Why in the world would any politician with 40 years experience, care about 1% of the population?
If Dennis really wanted to make a difference, he would drop out of the Dem race, and gift his campaign contributions to anyone with enough balls to run against Conyers.
With Dennis throwing his support behind Obama, it tells me that his personal gripes are more importent to him than making a difference.
Stop marginalizing the impeachment movement by making it about a man who can't get more than 1% of the vote.
I know the figure 1% really pisses people off, but this is the number history will record as the reality. Our whining won't make a tinkers damn worth of difference when our grandchildren are reading about the creation of America's modern monarchy.
In order to be taken seriously, we need to commit to a course of action that has historic ramifications. Dennis has the opposite effect.
The DLC needs us to either throw our votes away, see Perot or Nader, or assume the position.
The Dems ain't Dems anymore, as evidenced by Mr. Conyers talking about all the republicans that have joined, and are influencing the party even as I type.
The act of creating a another party in the heat of the electoral battle, will send an historic message that we the people ARE NOT represented.
It is better to try and fail, than lose our Democracy to a bunch of goosestepping sleeper cells.
At what point does Dennis understand that his candidacy might be counter productive, and provides the talking points to marginalize the entire impeachment movement?
Impeachment is too important, and has too much public support, to be historically attributed to a bunch of fringe malcontents.
As long as it is, Mr. Conyers will pander to our faces, as he allows the raping of America to continue.
He is a career politician, people like that don't listen to 1% of anything.
Marginalization of the impeachment movement?
That responsibility sits squarely on the shoulders of Pelosi, Conyers, the corporate media, and individual citizens - including bloggers - who refuse to listen Dennis' talking points. I don't believe 1% is the actual number of people who would like to see Kucinich's positions become presidential policies. I believe that is the number of people who are willing to vote their conscience, instead of abandoning their principles based on some definition of "electability".
Dennis took first place in the Independent Primary poll, DFA poll, and in one of the first debates.. It isn't that his talking points are marginalizing the impeachment movement - the same media that is marginalizing Kucinich and his talking points is marginalizing the impeachment movement, as well as any hope of real Democratic elections in this country.
I agree...
... and as long as we stubbornly insist that the Democratic party still represents us, people like Dennis Kucinich will continue to be marginalized.
Personally, I believe that the vote was so corrupt, that it is useless to continue playing their stupid little games. There is no way that Dennis only got 1% of the vote, so declaring that only 1% of the electorate held firm to their belief, disrespects all the ones who weren't counted. There is a difference between deserting, and being left behind.
This should no longer be about the semantics, it should be about the fact that these assholes have had years to straighten it out, and we're forced back on the merry-go-round of accusation, denial, and conspiracy theories.
It's time to gentrify the Democratic Party, or destroy it. Since the forces of Fascism are infiltrating the party even as we speak, we must assume that the gentrification process has begun, and we Constitution supporting Americans are the odd man out.
God grant me the wisdom to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.
I no longer believe that we can change the Democratic Party, due to the lockstep efforts of people within both party's, who have been working to bastardize it for decades. I believe that there is an overwhelmiong silent majority in America, that would embrace an inclusive party that understands that the framers of our Constitution were infinitely more intelligent and objective that this bullshit generation of greedy self centered baby boomers.
America doesn't have the time or resources to keep chasing our bipartisan tail, but a third party, even with a Bloomberg as the rallying point, could interject enough uncertainty to screw up their generational plans.
For whatever reason (the semantics don't matter to me), Mr. Kucinich will eventually drop out. Pick a reason any reason. Blame the media, blame me for all I care. As for myself, I accept the pattern I've witnessed for almost 50 years now.
One thing I haven't witnessed in my lifetime, is the creation of a viable third party. Have we as a nation, ever been so accepting of our fratboy leaders, that we refused to exert our independance for such a long time? Without uncertainty, ruling classes are born.
Any organization that has been around for long enough, becomes corrupted. I don't care if it's the Red Cross, America's political party's, or the Catholic baby rapers of America.
Politicians, political party's, and babies, should be changed frequently, and for the same reason.
I have accepted the fact that the people in Washington today, and have been in Washington for decades, are responsible for our present predicament, none excluded. I also accept that asking them to change the system they created, is an excercise in futility, but it'll sure give us something to do until they annoint the next Fascist.
I still think Dennis would make a great third party representative, but it's beginning to look like our fearless leaders will procrastinate until Bloomberg has the inside track.
A viable third party candidate will be presented. The only question is, "Will they use their talent for good, or evil?"
If it's Kucinich or Edwards, America might be able to stave off fascism until their party gets corrupted, then we'll need to change again. If it's Bloomberg, America will never be a viable Democracy again.
I get the PDA e-mails too. When I see the leaders of the Sierra Club throwing their weight around, I grow uncomfortable. I live in an area being gentrified today, for the sake of eco-real estate profits. I have no rights, because the Sierra Club wants to create the Bob Marshall Wilderness Park.
Does that sound progressive or Fascism?
You think it's bad now? Wait until the eco-tourism agents discover the natural beauty of YOUR area. Try finding someone who cares then. I've been trying for three years, all I have are callouses on my fingertips, and helicopter surveillance flights over my property.
It may be bad for a lot of Americans now, but it can get worse. You could live in an area that the Sierra Club wants to turn into an eco-Disneyland.
I would rather have a Constitution.
Third party
I totally agree, even a fourth and fifth... Other countries with a more mature and democratic approach to elections have multiple parties. But almost everything about our election process - from beginning to end - works against the possibility.
I would love to see a third party candidate with good positions on issues jump in this year, especially if Clinton is the Democratic nominee. In fact, I don't know what I will do on election day if she is. I need to research Bloomberg, I don't know much about his positions on issues.
I also agree that certain percentages of votes reflects the disinfranchisement of voters, and not necessarily how people actually voted.
I also would rather have the Constitution - at least I would like for Congress to uphold the parts that work well when implemented (like impeachment). However, I think that much of what is wrong with our electoral process is because parts of the Constitution still need amending in that regard. The original framers intended for only large property owners to vote. Can you imagine what they would think about an African American and woman running for president - and leading the pack? I want to feel happy about this time in our history. But, sadly, the diversity is cosmetic; these 2 candidates have squandered this opportunity and the people's trust by submitting to corporate influence and taking positions on issues that represent a very small demographic: large property owners.
The more things "change", the more they stay the same. And the "changers" are going to make sure it stays that way.
Well, I agree with both of you, however,
I'm not convinced that even with the diversity of 3, 4 or more parties, it would actually change things, other than be slightly more interesting.
It's still the TOP DOLLAR that counts. It's where the people and corporate entities with MONEY decide where they want to put their money that ultimately determines who the forerunners will be.
If we wanted to make a really significant change in our elections -- setting a dollar amount for each candidate to be raised, setting air time for each candidate, etc., I think, would make a tremendous difference. Equity in money and media time for each candidate would put the whole election process in a different perspective.
Further, getting rid of the electoral vote I think would be a definite PLUS.
And, yes, the Constitution does need some vamping up -- with more safeguards against those who commit high crimes and misdemeanors, etc. and a number of areas.

Mark, just one small thing!
Whether deliberately misinterpreted by the media or others, the fact is that Kucinich lent his support to Obama as second to him in the Iowa caucus ONLY. It was not, in fact, an endorsement by Kucinich of Obama for the presidential nominee.
Kucinich was marginalized long ago by Pelosi, Conyers, et al. Of course, I guess being the Mr. 1% offers them a greater momentum for their marginalization of him.
Mainstream politicians really must have their FEAR of the man Kucinich -- FEAR of the truth that he would speak, the remedies he would offer -- why else would he have been left out of election debates, news, and all references to him by the MEDIA? * FEAR, MEDIA and the corporate agenda that has the "books" all stacked up with money (and those wanting a return on their investment) -- that's why. I don't dislike Obama and Edwards -- I am largely concerned with either's ability to say "no!"
Kucinich, on the other hand, sees what has gone on with razor sharpness, knows what needs to be done to turn things around, has the experience and, as we know, a Constitutional loving man.
Unless there is Impeachment, I'm not sure anything will make a difference one way or another, regardless of who becomes the nominee. And, again, just like with Gore, Americans lose another opportunity to have a man of courage, conviction and American ideals for a chance at the presidency.
*Kucinich is fighting back in NH. Kucinich asks for New Hampshire recount in the interest of election integrity

Thank you for the correction, for now.
My information resources are limited, so I didn't see anything about the "one time only" part. But isn't that part of the process? Politicians know when they make statements like that, a certain amount of supporters will see it as I did.
I am not a vote to be used or dispensed with, at the whim of any candidate.
I will not support Obama under any curcumstances, nor do I support Hillary. If you noticed, my post in support of John Edwards, assumes that he won't be the Democratic nominee either.
This election has already been decided, it's just of matter of us picking which military industrial complex toady will win, and the rationalization process used to justify it with at least 51% of the citizenry.
You made good points tahoe, but the web of deceipt involving the vote counting during this year's presidential election, seems to be scripted to last until at least the next election.
They're fighting to stalemate.
I think you're probably right, Mark!
The die has undoubtedly been cast! And, again, Americans will get what they DON'T want!
It's just one more sad commentary of this country that we cannot have elections where an individual is selected on his/her merits without the necessity of voting machine fraud.
But, again, without Impeachment, does it really make a difference? "Cancer" has never been treated without first removing the tumor, THEN treating the surrounding area.
When a house is deteriorating and falling apart, it's better to tear it down and build it up from the ground floor, IMHO!!!

The Bomb in the Shadows: Proliferation, Corruption and the Way of the World
Written by Chris Floyd
Tuesday, 08 January 2008
This week, the Sunday Times lifted the lid on one of the most important stories of the last quarter-century: how American officials sold nuclear arms technology to illegal proliferators -- including ideological allies of al Qaeda -- in return for bribes and other inducements. This widespread corruption has been protected from exposure by the highest levels of the U.S. government, which has gone to enormous lengths to protect the truth from coming out. The entire planet has been put at grave risk by the greed -- and geopolitical gamesmanship -- that lies behind this criminal enterprise, which actually is even more extensive, and goes back further in time, than the newspaper's remarkable revelations.
The Sunday Times story is based on the evidence provided by former FBI translator Sibel Edmonds, who has been subjected to an unprecedented campaign of state-enforced muzzling by the Bush Administration since she first tried to speak out about the corrupt connections between American officials and foreign agents she discovered when reviewing transcripts associated with the 9/11 investigation. As even the leaders of the whitewashing 9/11 Commission themselves now admit, that investigation was deliberately sabotaged by the Bush Administration – in part to cover up the nuclear proliferation network that has directly or indirectly enriched so many in the American elite over the past decades – including the sitting president of the United States, George W. Bush.
I.
Edmonds' revelations should be seen in their larger historical context, as an outgrowth of the activities of BCCI, the "Bank of Credit and Commercial International," a supposed financial group that a U.S. Senate investigation called "one of the largest criminal enterprises in history." BCCI was a prime vehicle for clandestine nuclear proliferation, among many other illegal activities, and was also used by the CIA and the White House for various covert operations, including secret military and financial support for Saddam Hussein. It also paid numerous grandees of the Democratic and Republican parties to front its operations – and gave George W. Bush $25 million to rescue one of his many business failures.
(Continued after the jump.)
Although BCCI as a "bank" eventually failed, spectacularly, costing its unsuspecting customers more than $10 billion, almost no one was punished for its myriad crimes, and the full extent of the organization's activities continue to be shielded by the many national governments that became entangled in its operations, including the United States and Great Britain, where the Labour government has made extraordinary interventions in court cases to protect BCCI's secrets, invoking the most draconian state secret laws to quash a lawsuit against the Bank of England for the blind but knowing eye that the regulator turned toward BCCI's deadly fraud.
Before exploring these deeper connections further, let's review the tip of the iceberg that Edmonds has courageously exposed, despite the very real threat of retaliation from the U.S. government. From the Times:
"Edmonds described how foreign intelligence agents had enlisted the support of US officials to acquire a network of moles in sensitive military and nuclear institutions. Among the hours of covert tape recordings, she says she heard evidence that one well-known senior official in the US State Department was being paid by Turkish agents in Washington who were selling the information on to black market buyers, including Pakistan.
"The name of the official – who has held a series of top government posts – is known to The Sunday Times. He strongly denies the claims. However, Edmonds said: 'He was aiding foreign operatives against US interests by passing them highly classified information, not only from the State Department but also from the Pentagon, in exchange for money, position and political objectives.'
"She claims that the FBI was also gathering evidence against senior Pentagon officials – including household names – who were aiding foreign agents. 'If you made public all the information that the FBI have on this case, you will see very high-level people going through criminal trials,' she said."
Edmonds goes on to provide details of the operation, which "appeared to be obtaining information from every nuclear agency in the United States," under the protection of Pentagon and State Department officials. Turkish and Israeli cut-outs were used to get nuclear info to the ultimate recipient, Pakistan's intelligence agency, Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), and Abdul Qadeer Khan, "father" of Pakistan's nuclear bomb. As the Times notes:
"The Pakistani operation was led by General Mahmoud Ahmad, then the ISI chief…Intelligence analysts say that members of the ISI were close to Al-Qaeda before and after 9/11. Indeed, Ahmad was accused of sanctioning a $100,000 wire payment to Mohammed Atta, one of the 9/11 hijackers, immediately before the attacks.
"The results of the espionage were almost certainly passed to Abdul Qadeer Khan, the Pakistani nuclear scientist. Khan was close to Ahmad and the ISI. While running Pakistan's nuclear programme, he became a millionaire by selling atomic secrets to Libya, Iran and North Korea. He also used a network of companies in America and Britain to obtain components for a nuclear programme. Khan caused an alert among western intelligence agencies when his aides met Osama Bin Laden."
While the Times declined to name the top State Department official cited by Edmonds, elsewhere she has said it was Mark Grossman, "former #3 at the State Department, former ambassador to Turkey, and current Vice President at The Cohen Group, the lobbying company run by former Secretary of Defense William Cohen," notes the blogger Lukery, who has long done sterling service in publicizing Edmonds' plight and her revelations – which, as Lukery notes, are not confined to the nuclear proliferation angle featured in the Sunday Times.
Lukery goes on to note that the other "household names" mentioned by Edmonds include "Richard Perle and Douglas Feith and possibly Paul Wolfowitz. Less familiar names include Eric Edelman, Feith's replacement at the Pentagon, and former Congressman Stephen Solarz."
Lukery also zeroes in on this telling revelation:
"The Times article then notes something that I reported 18 months ago. Immediately after 911, the FBI arrested a bunch of people suspected of being involved with the attacks -- including four associates of key targets of FBI's counterintelligence operations. Sibel heard the targets tell Marc Grossman: 'We need to get them out of the US because we can't afford for them to spill the beans.' Grossman duly facilitated their release from jail and the suspects immediately left the country without further investigation or interrogation.
"Let me repeat that for emphasis: The #3 guy at the State Dept facilitated the immediate release of 9/11 suspects at the request of targets of the FBI's investigation."
(Grossman has denied all of Edmonds' allegations, telling the Sunday Times: "If you are calling me to say somebody said that I took money, that’s outrageous . . . I do not have anything to say about such stupid ridiculous things as this.")
The nuclear proliferation-for-profit ring is just one of the criminal operations that a genuine investigation of the 9/11 attacks would bring to light. Because once you start exploring any part of the dark nexus where so much of the world's business is really conducted – the shadowlands where covert operations, criminal networks, terrorism, high finance and state policy mingle, and battle, in profitable murk – all manner of chicanery is bound to emerge. And so, much as the probe into the assassination of John Kennedy was short-circuited in part to prevent exposure of a wide range of "black ops" involving the U.S. government, the Mob and other unsavoury players, so too the 9/11 attacks will never receive a full, unfettered investigation, but will remain forever – and deliberately – a matter of dispute, breeding arrant crankery and disturbing truth in equal measure, with the latter always tarred and obscured by the former.
II.
This is also true, in some respects, of the 1992 U.S. Senate investigation into what was known as "the BCCI Affair," which left several stones unturned and many questions unanswered. There are two main differences, however. First, the Senate investigation – although it operated within fairly circumscribed limits, pulled many punches, and shied away from some evidence that clearly led to the highest echelons of government -- was actually much more thorough than the official probes of the Kennedy assassination and 9/11. And second, unlike those two investigations, which continue to generate heated interest year after year, the BCCI Affair has been almost completely erased from public memory. Yet a grasp of BCCI's operations – many of which simply continued in other guises when the "bank" itself disappeared – is essential to understanding much of what is happening in the political world today, including Edmonds' revelations.
(The amnesia surrounding BCCI is even more remarkable when you consider that the man who led the 1992 probe – which turned up so much dirt involving the first Bush administration – was none other than Senator John Kerry. Yet Kerry – who knew where so many Bush bones were buried, and who had once displayed genuine moral courage in denouncing the Vietnam War after his service there – used none of this knowledge, and showed none of this courage, when seeking to oust the second Bush Administration, which retained many tainted figures from the first reign, and was headed by a man who had taken millions of dollars from BCCI. Instead Kerry spent the campaign – as he had spent much of his Senate career – trying to prove to the corporate and militarist elite that he was a "safe pair of hands," someone who wouldn't really rock the boat or kill the elite's flock of golden geese. Having thus disarmed himself, he failed to generate the landslide he would have needed to overcome the Bush Faction's election-skewing machinery – although it is very likely that Kerry would have won the election anyway had Ohio's votes been counted fairly. But here too he folded and refused to fight, choosing, like Al Gore before him, not to risk his insider status with a serious, genuine challenge to the system.)
The full details of BCCI's origins and activities – and its bipartisan corruption of American politics – can be found in the Senate report of its investigation, which is available in full at the website of the Federation of American Scientists. It is a long report, but repays reading. The extent of the criminality and moral corruption it documents is truly mind-boggling. Below is a very brief précis of the Senate's findings.
BCCI was founded by Pakistan tycoon Agha Hasan Abedi, who used what Senate investigators called his "extraordinary personal charisma" to charm his way into friendships with the world's global elite, including U.S. President Jimmy Carter and, more crucially for the operation's development, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahayan, the illiterate ruler of Abu Dhabi, who had been installed as leader of the oil-rich state in 1966, after the British engineered a coup against his brother. Abedi became in effect the personal manager of Sheik Zayed's money – and the vast wealth of Abu Dhabi – which he used to fund the creation of BCCI.
As described by the Senate, BCCI's organization set-up sounds remarkably like the one set up later by Bush Family paymaster Ken Lay with his Enron Corporation:
"BCCI was from its earliest days made up of multiplying layers of entities, related to one another through an impenetrable series of holding companies, affiliates, subsidiaries, banks-within-banks, insider dealings and nominee relationships. By fracturing corporate structure, record keeping, regulatory review, and audits, the complex BCCI family of entities created by Abedi was able to evade ordinary legal restrictions on the movement of capital and goods as a matter of daily practice and routine. In creating BCCI as a vehicle fundamentally free of government control, Abedi developed in BCCI an ideal mechanism for facilitating illicit activity by others, including such activity by officials of many of the governments whose laws BCCI was breaking."
And what were the illicit activities that BCCI facilitated for its entangled crime gangs and government agents? The Senate report:
"BCCI's criminality included fraud by BCCI and BCCI customers involving billions of dollars; money laundering in Europe, Africa, Asia, and the Americas; BCCI's bribery of officials in most of those locations; support of terrorism, arms trafficking, and the sale of nuclear technologies; management of prostitution; the commission and facilitation of income tax evasion, smuggling, and illegal immigration; illicit purchases of banks and real estate; and a panoply of financial crimes limited only by the imagination of its officers and customers."
The Senate investigators found that the CIA lied about is extensive, long-term contacts with BCCI, although the Kerry panel often couched this flagrant falsehood in more decorous tones, e.g., "the CIA inadvertently failed" to tell the proper federal officials about BCCI's criminal activities (emphasis added). Still, much of the findings are straightforward on this point: "After the CIA knew that BCCI was as an institution a fundamentally corrupt criminal enterprise, it continued to use both BCCI and First American, BCCI's secretly held U.S. subsidiary, for CIA operations."
The criminals of BCCI were intimately involved in the execution of U.S. foreign policy during the Reagan-Bush administrations, including the Iran-Contra scandal, in which Reagan officials shipped weapons to American hostage-takers in Iran in exchange for clandestine cash for the terrorist army it was using to wage proxy war against Nicaragua. When George Bush Sr. became president, BCCI became a primary conduit for funneling secret aid to Saddam Hussein. The organization also received extraordinary protection from the White House when lower-level federal prosecutors began indicting BCCI associates for laundering drug cartel money and running guns and money to Iraq.
As I have noted elsewhere, the Italian bank BNL was one of BCCI's main tentacles. BNL's Atlanta branch was the primary conduit used to send millions of secret dollars to Saddam for arms purchases, including deadly chemicals and other WMD materials supplied by the Chilean arms dealer Cardoen and various politically-connected operators in the United States like, weapons merchant Matrix Churchill.
When three BNL officials were indicted in 1991 for a fraud scam used to mask payments to Saddam, Bush I moved to throttle the investigation. He appointed lawyers from both Cardoen and Matrix to top Justice Department posts – where they supervised the officials investigating their old companies. The overall probe was directed by Justice Department investigator Robert Mueller. Meanwhile, White House aides applied heavy pressure on other prosecutors to restrict the range of the probe – especially the fact that Bush cabinet officials Brent Scowcroft and Lawrence Eagleburger had served as consultants for BNL during their pre-White House days as partners in Henry Kissinger's lobbying outfit, Kissinger Associates.
[In addition to these connections with the criminal network, another of Kissinger's partners, retired Brazilian diplomat Sergio da Costa "served as the front-man" for the BCCI takeover of a Brazilian bank, Senate investigators found. Tellingly, the Senate report's chapter on Kissinger Associates' contacts with BCCI was deleted from the final, published version – reportedly after pressure from Kissinger himself – although it can still be found in the FAS version noted above. Kissinger, of course, would later turn down an appointment from Bush II to direct the official investigation into the 9/11 attacks – in order to avoid public scrutiny of his business affairs.]
The Kerry report found that the 1991 BNL probe had been unaccountably "botched" – witnesses went missing, CIA records got "lost," all sorts of bad luck. Most of the big BCCI players went unpunished or got off with wrist-slap fines and sanctions.
One of the White House aides who unlawfully intervened in the BNL prosecution was a certain factotum named Jay S. ByBee. In 1994, ByBee was appointed by George W. Bush to a place on the federal appeals court – a lifetime sinecure of perks and power. Mueller, meanwhile wound up as head of the FBI, appointed to the post in by George W. in July 2001, where directed the FBI's response – or lack of response – to the torrent of terrorism alerts during that fateful summer.
III.
Bush II had good reason to reward those who helped his father provide cover for BCCI. In addition to the continuing "shadowland" relationships between U.S. intelligence and key players in BCCI operations (especially the ISI connections which had used BCCI to fund Pakistan's secret nuclear arms program), George Walker Bush had benefited materially from his own connection to BCCI. As Kevin Phillips points out in his devastating – and woefully ignored – book on the Bushes, American Dynasty, Bush II's first large-scale business enterprise, the Arbusto oil company, was almost certainly financed in part with investments from American frontmen for BCCI-connected Saudi grandees Salem bin Laden, older brother of Osama bin Laden and then the head of the family, and Khalid bin Mahfouz, a major stockholder in BCCI.
The failing Arbusto was later bought out by Harken Energy in a sweetheart deal that landed business failure Bush a plum spot on the Harken board and plenty of stock to play with. Bush soon worked his magic touch on Harken: the company began to tank. It was saved by an unusual infusion of $25 million from the Union Bank of Switzerland, one of BCCI's associates. The deal was brokered by long-time Bush family contributor Jackson Stephens – who, curiously enough, was also a major paymaster for Bill Clinton's political rise. In fact, in 1992, Stephens was the largest individual contributor to both Bush I and Clinton in their presidential contest.
Phillips quotes a 1991 Wall Street Journal story on young Bush's myriad ties to the criminal organization: "The mosaic of BCCI connections surrounding Harken Energy may prove nothing more than how ubiquitous the rogue bank's ties were," the paper wrote. "But the number of BCCI-connected people who had dealings with Harken – all since George W. Bush came on board – likewise raises the question of whether they mask an effort to cozy up to a presidential son."
Given the copious documentation by the Senate and media investigations of Bush I's extensive use of BCCI to fund his and Reagan's illegal dealings with Saddam, Iran, drug cartels and the Contras, and Bush's strenuous efforts to block investigations of BCCI, the latter's huge payoffs to Bush II look more like payments for services rendered by the Bush Family, rather than just attempts to curry presidential favor.
IV.
Many of the same interests that employed BCCI for various black ops turn up again in Sibel Edmond's revelations: the ISI and Abdul Qadeer Khan, and Turkish and Israeli criminals/covert operators. Indeed, the latter played a key role in one of the Senate report's more chilling segments: "Training of Cartel Death Squads." From the report:
"In April 1989, a network of Israeli arms traffickers, operating out of Miami, made a shipment of 500 Israeli manufactured machine guns through the Caribbean island of Antigua for the use of members of the Medellin cartel. Later, one of these weapons was used in the assassination of Colombian presidential candidate Luis Carlos Galan, and several other of the weapons were found in the possession of cartel kingpin Jose Gonzalo Rodriguez Gacha after his death in a gunfight with Colombian drug agents.
"The principals in the arms trafficking included Yair Klein, who had previously been identified in Colombian drug enforcement documents as involved in training paramilitary squads for the cocaine cartel in Medellin; Pinchas Shahar, an Israeli intelligence operative, and Maurice Sarfati, an Israeli "businessman" operating out of Miami and Paris.
"The scandal broke after a broadcast by NBC News on August 21, 1989 about Klein's activities, and a Colombian judge charged Klein with having engaged in criminal conspiracy in training the private armies for the cartel. In the months that followed, the scandal extended to Antigua as well, an island with no substantial military force and no need for the 500 machine guns its foreign minister ordered from Israeli military industries."
Oddly enough, the arming and training of death squads in Antiqua grew out of yet another corruption of Reagan-Bush policy by BCCI: a U.S. government loan of $2 million to Sarfati, supposedly for a melon farm he was to establish in Antiqua. The money was funneled through the Overseas Private Investment Corporation (OPIC), a prime channel of crony pork – and cover for covert operations – for decades. The loan was obtained after BCCI officials vouched for Sarfati's worthiness to OPIC. The Senate report says:
"Ultimately, OPIC lost its entire investment in the melon farm and concluded that it had been defrauded by Sarfati. After filing suit against Sarfati, OPIC sold its remaining interest in the melon farm, at a loss of 50 cent on the dollar, to an Israeli businessman, Bruce Rappaport, and an entity owned by him called the Swiss American Bank. Rappaport, a confidante of former CIA director William Casey, was in this period also in frequent contact with BCCI's original U.S. contact, Bert Lance [who had been forced to resign as Jimmy Carter's budget chief during a corruption scandal. Lance was also a major partner with Jackson Stephens and others in BCCI-related deals.] Coincidentally, one of BCCI's principal board members, Alfred Hartmann, who was also chairman of BCCI's secretly-owned Swiss affiliate BCP, also sat on the board of another of Rappaport's banks."
This is the way the world works. Behind the glitz and gossip of presidential campaigns, behind all the earnest "policy debates" on Capitol Hill, behind all the "position papers" and "vision statements" of think tanks and political parties, behind all the great panoply of state and our august Establishment institutions, thieves and murderers have their way, in league with the great and good.
Anyone who ascends to national power has to make a deal with the devil: either directly to plunge their hands into filth and blood, or else swaddle themselves in "plausible deniability," looking away from the grubby details but knowing full well that their minions, agents and backers are doing "whatever it takes" to keep the machine of power and money rolling on.
This doesn't mean that leaders can't also try to do good things as well, and occasionally accomplish them. After all, Al Capone was famous for his acts of benevolence. Indeed, some leaders pursue idealistic or ameliorative policies in order to "justify" the crimes and lies that sustain the system which has raised them on high. But the devil will have his due, and the price of power must always be paid – and it is ordinary people, especially the most innocent and vulnerable among us, who always end up paying it.

Sibel, Giraldi, American Conservative Mag
Philip Giraldi from Cannistraro Associates has a column in the April 24 (print) edition of The American Conservative magazine about the story surrounding Sibel Edmonds.
According to Sibel, (no link, via email), this is "a fantastic short piece by Phil Giraldi; it sums up the case very well, considering the length... as far as published articles go, this one nails it 100%"
I've liberated the article from print (errors are mine):
---------------------------------
"Sibel Edmonds, the Turkish FBI translator turned whistleblower who has been subjected to a gag order could provide a major insight into how neoconservatives distort US foreign policy and enrich themselves at the same time. On one level, her story appears straightforward: several Turkish lobbying groups allegedly bribed congressmen to support policies favourable to Ankara. But beyond that, the Edmonds revelations become more serpentine and appear to involve AIPAC, Israel and a number of leading neoconservatives who have profited from the Turkish connection. Israel has long cultivated a close relationship with Turkey since Ankara's neighbours and historic enemies - Iran, Syria and Iraq - are also hostile to Tel Aviv. Islamic Turkey has also had considerable symbolic value for Israel, demonstrating that hostility to Muslim neighbours is not a sine qua non for the Jewish state.
Turkey benefits from the relationship by securing general benevolence and increased aid from the US Congress - as well as access to otherwise unattainable military technology. The Turkish General Staff has a particular interest because much of the military spending is channeled through companies in which the generals have a financial stake, making for a very cozy and comfortable business arrangement. The commercial interest has also fostered close political ties, with the American Turkish Council, American Turkish Cultural Alliance and the Assembly of Turkish American Associations all developing warm relationships with AIPAC and other Jewish and Israel advocacy groups throughout the US.
Someone has to be in the middle to keep the happy affair going, so enter the neocons, intent on securing Israel against all comers and also keen to turn a dollar. In fact the neocons seem to have a deep and abiding interest in Turkey, which, under other circumstances, might be difficult to explain. Doug Feith's International Advisors Inc, a registered agent for Turkey in 1989 - 1994, netted $600,000 per year from Turkey, with Richard Perle taking $48,000 annually as a consultant. Other noted neoconservatives linked to Turkey are former State Department number three, Marc Grossman, current Pentagon Undersecretary of Defense for Policy Eric Edelman, Paul Wolfowitz and former congressman Stephen Solarz. The money involved does not appear to come from the Turkish government, and FBI investigators are trying to determine its source and how it is distributed. Some of it may come from criminal activity, possibly drug trafficking, but much more might come from arms dealing. Contracts in the hundreds of millions, or even billions of dollars provide considerable fat for those well placed to benefit. Investigators are also looking at Israel's particular expertise in the illegal sale of US military technology to countries like China and India. Fraudulent end-user certificates produced by Defense Ministries in Israel and Turkey are all that is needed to divert military technology to other, less benign, consumers. The military-industrial-complex/neocon network is also well attested. Doug Feith has been associated with Northrup Grumman for years, while defense contractors fund many neocon-linked think tanks and "information" services. Feith, Perle and a number of other neocons have long had beneficial relationships with various Israeli defense contractors."

The "Money" Quote & Why How The Corruption Hurts Us All
This diary also discusses the Chris Floyd Article: Chris Floyd Ties Bush and BCCI to Sibel Edmonds Bombshell and as Inky99 pointed out, the "money quote" is:
Mr. Chairman--
As increasingly being revealed, "the acorn doesn't fall far from
the tree."
These revelations that we are gradually learning from the courageousness of Edmonds are horrifying, but in so many ways not at all surprising.
As stated above from the Constitution:
The Constitution does NOT say "MIGHT BE REMOVED," "MAY BE REMOVED" -- it says SHALL BE REMOVED.
Therefore, since there has been apparent Treason, Bribery and high Crimes and Misdemeanors committed by the President and the Vice-President and they have not yet even been exposed to Impeachments hearings, much less having been removed from Office, we can only assume that those responsible for Impeachment hearings and their subsequent removal from Office must share in the crimes of the President and the Vice-President, and should be subject to Impeachment, as well.

How do you like the fact
that 81% of the votes cast in New Hampshire were "Tabulated" by ONE MAN? In secret. Without check or balance. (But maybe with a few Republican checks?)
Does anyone BELIEVE that Dennis only got 1% of the New Hampshire vote? If so, I have a bridge I'd like to sell - - - Corruption in the form of miscount has already reared its head, and it's gonna get worse.
I agree that something is wrong, Kory!
Kucinich was at the top with New Hampshire voters -- what happened?

LHS Executive Ken Hajjar: "I mean, I don't pay attention to every little law. It's just, it's up to the Registrars [election officials]
1-9-08: New England voting machine firm has executive criminal record
They program every single voting machine in New Hampshire, Connecticut, almost all of Massachusetts, Vermont, and Maine. But did state officials in five New England states ever do a criminal background check on this company's executives? Do the laws of these five states even ALLOW them to hire convicted criminals for services paid for by the state? What about over 500 local towns and municipalities?
According to my sources, LHS Marketing and Sales Director Ken Hajjar grew up with owner John Silvestro in Lawrence, Massachusetts. They both moved to Londonderry, New Hampshire, where Ken Hajjar was arrested, indicted, and pleaded guilty to "sale / CND" and sentenced to 12 months in the Rockingham County Correctional facility, and fined $2000. As things go for the politically connected, he was then given a deferred sentence and $1000 of his fine was suspended.
[]
Hajjar doesn't limit his involvement in the voting machine business to sales. According to an interview conducted by Brad Friedman, Hajjar totes memory cards around in the trunk of his car and defends the boggling concept of swapping out memory cards during the middle of elections.

quote:(excerpt)
Other LHS staff members we spoke with, including Mike Carlson and Tom Burge, provided similar comments. They said they would open machines up during an election and swap memory cards as needed. This is illegal under Connecticut law and Deputy Secretary Mara told us she has since informed LHS that such actions were in violation of Connecticut election laws.
In 2006, as Hajjar argued in favor of their policy to change cards during elections, I asked him about about the laws which govern chain of custody issues. His response: "I mean, I don't pay attention to every little law. It's just, it's up to the Registrars. All we are is a support organization on Election Day".
He said he had three memory cards in the trunk of his car and, in the event they had to be used, the chain of custody issues wouldn't matter since, "once you run the [pre-election] test deck through, you're golden".
Black Box Voting has sent out 10 freedom of information requests, called "right to know requests" in New Hampshire, and public records requests elsewhere.
Hajjar's conviction was in 1987, but we have asked also for complaints filed on a threat allegedly made in recent years to a New Hampshire woman, and any other reports for Hajjar or LHS owner John Silvestro.
Until recently, LHS employees were listed on the company Web site. Now the pages identifying who programs New England voting machines have been taken down.
We want to know.
We want to know exactly what the secretaries of state/commonwealth know about LHS Associates.
Did they know of Hajjar's criminal background? If so, why's he toting voting machine cards around in the trunk of his car in case they are "needed" in live elections, and if not, why not?

UPDATE JAN 9 9am PST: TOWN OF SUTTON CONFIRMS RON PAUL TOTALS WERE 31, NOT ZERO.
I just got off the phone with Jennifer Call, Town Clerk for Sutton. She confirmed that the Ron Paul totals in Sutton were actually 31, and said that they were "left off the tally sheet" and it was human error.
This is not an acceptable answer, especially because one of the most common forms of fraud in a hand count system is to alter or omit results on the reporting sheet. Hand count is lovely, transparent. They then fill out another reconciliation sheet, often in front of witnesses, and it looks fine. Then they provide a summary or media sheet with the incorrect results.
A Web site here: http://www.wheresthepaper.org has more on fraud techniques with hand counted paper ballots. You'll have to dig for it -- or Google, and the excellent research on this is Theresa Hommel from the state of New York.

Comma delimited database: NH municipalities hand count vs use Diebold machines: http://www.bbvdocs.org/NH/state/Jan-08-votingsystems-NH.txt
ORIGINAL ARTICLE
John Silvestro and his small private business, LHS Associates, has the exclusive programming contracts for all New Hampshire voting machines, which combined will count about 81 percent of the vote tomorrow.
Silvestro IS the New Hampshire chain of custody
Or at least a very large component in it.
Last fall, with the help of some New Hampshire citizens, Black Box Voting began working on a "New Hampshire Chain of Custody" project, in which we identified some of the areas of concern that might affect many jurisdictions at once. First on the list is LHS Associates, a vendor with inside access to every memory card in New Hampshire, as well as to the chips containing the "brain" of the Diebold optical scan machines.
LHS Associates programs all the memory cards in New Hampshire and Connecticut; about all of Vermont's voting machines, and has a lock on almost all of Massachusetts as well.
RARE VIDEO FOOTAGE
In an unusual confluence of available video, we obtained footage of Silvestro grappling with Harri Hursti, the master hacker who had his way with the Diebold optical scans in Leon County, Florida in the famous exploit that was showcased in the film Hacking Democracy.
The exact same make, model and version hacked in the Black Box Voting project in Leon County is used throughout New Hampshire, where about 45 percent of elections administrators hand count paper ballots at the polling place, with the remaining locations all using the Diebold version 1.94w optical scan machine. Because the voting machine locations tend to be urban, this represents about 81 percent of the New Hampshire voters.
The video shows Harri Hursti testifying on Sept. 19 before the New Hampshire legislature, attempting to explain significant vulnerabilities requiring urgent mitigations; throughout his testimony, Silvestro inserted his own comments, opinions, misstatements and speculations.
VOTING MACHINE CHECKUP
One area of disagreement between Hursti and Silvestro was the amount of expertise needed to exploit the Diebold 1.94w optical scan system. Silvestro claimed (in a strange contortion of reasoning) that he doesn't hire very skilled programmers, implying that this makes New Hampshire elections more secure.
Hursti pointed out that hiring programmers with a lack of knowledge is generally not considered a security feature, and also that an average high schooler can learn to exploit the... More

Another Congressman urges IMPEACH CHENEY
Rep. Michaud seeks to impeach Cheney
By Walter Griffin
Tuesday, January 08, 2008 - Bangor Daily News
Democratic U.S. Rep. Michael Michaud has called for impeachment hearings into the conduct of Vice President Dick Cheney.
Michaud, who represents Maine’s 2nd District, expressed his position in a letter to House Judiciary Committee Chairman John Conyers of Michigan last month. In it, Michaud charged that there was "no doubt" that the Bush administration had "dangerously expanded the scope of executive authority" and flouted "the constitutionally defined separation of powers."
Michaud said that serious allegations had been raised against the vice president regarding his role in providing "mischaracterizing information" in the run-up to the invasion of Iraq five years ago as well as the nuclear weapons capabilities of Iran.
He also cited the political retaliation against former CIA officer Valerie Plame, the abuse of detainees in contravention of the Geneva Convention and the illegal wiretapping of American citizens as other reasons for moving forward with hearings. Michaud referred to a recent poll which indicated that 70 percent of the American public believed that Cheney had abused his power.

I M P E A C H
or RESIGN !!!
When One Strips Away Political Calculations and
crystal ball gazing--trying to predict how many people would or would not vote for impeachment, before the facts are even revealed--it's all quite logical. When one looks objectively at what the Administration has done in violation of the Constitution, including (but certainly not limited to) allegations of covering up Bribery of employees of the Executive Branch, it's clear that for Congress to overlook malfeasance of this magnitude, is in itself malfeasance.
184,253 citizens have signed Representative Wexler's petition.
But now the corruption
has become so flagrant and blatant that any hope of restoration of integrity to the voting process has almost totally gone by the boards. For example, in the so-called "Presidential election process," the primaries are being so rigged that the two candidates the PEOPLE want are being frozen out of the possibility of nomination! Neither Kucinich nor Paul are supposed to get a single delegate, because if they did, their names would have to be placed in Nomination, and if real people instead of E$tabli$hment shills are accidentally named as delegates to the Conventions, the media-created "Front-runners" might kill each other off, and the "Dark Horses," Kucinich and Paul, could accidentally become the nominees. Then one of them might be elected, and the Nation returned to Constitutional government; and we couldn't have THAT, now, COULD WE?
Who fell asleep at the switch?
You did John. It is your job to enforce the law, you refuse to do your job, and then shit like this is allowed to happen.
You, and they, should be in Gitmo.
Printed online today, by the New York Times. Here are a few paragraphs..
WASHINGTON — When the top federal prosecutor in New Jersey needed to find an outside lawyer to monitor a large corporation willing to settle criminal charges out of court last fall, he turned to former Attorney General John Ashcroft, his onetime boss. With no public notice and no bidding, the company awarded Mr. Ashcroft an 18-month contract worth $28 million to $52 million.
That contract, which Justice Department officials in Washington learned about only several weeks ago, has prompted an internal inquiry into the department’s procedures for selecting outside monitors to police settlements with large companies.
The contract between Mr. Ashcroft’s consulting firm, the Ashcroft Group, and Zimmer Holdings, a medical supply company in Indiana, has also drawn the attention of Congressional investigators.
The New Jersey prosecutor, United States Attorney Christopher J. Christie, directed similar monitoring contracts last year to two other former Justice Department colleagues from the Bush administration, as well as to a former Republican state attorney general in New Jersey.
Officials said that while there had been no accusations of wrongdoing on the part of Mr. Christie or Mr. Ashcroft, aides to Attorney General Michael B. Mukasey were concerned about the appearance of favoritism.
Mr. Mukasey, a former federal judge who was sworn in as attorney general in November, has vowed to remove political considerations from decision-making at the department in the wake of a series of scandals under his predecessor, Alberto R. Gonzales.
Mr. Ashcroft was awarded the contract last fall at the direction of Mr. Christie as part of his office’s settlement of criminal accusations against Zimmer Holdings and four smaller firms accused of paying kickbacks to doctors.
A spokesman for Mr. Ashcroft said that the Ashcroft Group had not lobbied for the contract but was pleased by the referral.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Under the settlements with the Justice Department, the companies negotiate the fees with the monitors themselves, a situation legal scholars say has the potential for abuse because companies might be overly generous to encourage leniency.
Department officials said that there were few internal guidelines for hiring independent monitors and that Mr. Christie was not required to seek approval from the Justice Department to name Mr. Ashcroft and the others and had not done so.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Now why would the Just-Us department award this incredibly generous opportunity to their former boss? Could it possibly be to shut him up about the hospital visit by Gonzo and friends?
Once again, I'll use my crystal ball to see the future. Mr. Ashcroft will now refuse to madmouth his former bosses, as he tells Congress exactly what Cheney tells them.
Hell, I'll tell you the same thing right now, and I'll only charge you half.
"Go intercourse yourself." Where's my check?
Can You Say "Unbridled Corruption" Due to Lack of Oversight?
As long as Congress sits back waiting for the stars to align, the votes to line up, yet another election, and liberal sprinkles of pixie dust—corruption in the Bush Administration will increase exponentially. And that “great sucking sound” we hear? That’s our tax dollars being sucked into the pockets of current and former Administration cronies.
BTW: 185, 004 Have signed Representative Wexler's Petition calling for Cheney's Impeachment.
On Topic, then New Hampshire
When I HAVE to see a doctor, I go to the E.R. When they ask me why I didn't go to see MY doctor, I say I don't have one. Basically, it costs $200 to for me to be referred to a specialist. This sounds more expensive than it is, as I do this only when absolutely necessary. On average, three years between visits. Second point, My doc would charge to send me to the same specialist the E.R. doc sends me to.
This is how the poor (Hi!) get health care in this country. The downside comes when small problems turn into big ones BECAUSE they went unattended. Cancer, for example. Also, it is a given that "small" problems are simply endured rather than cured. As when I broke my wrist, last spring. I am enduring it. Likely will for the rest of my life. It is the sort of thing that diminishes my capabilities. Permanently.
The wealthy, of course, actually have those things that bother them dealt with, and also, they regularly visit doctors to get looked over for things that haven't yet bothered them. And, of course, the wealthy get to use phrases like "Punished for being Successful" at tax time.
Particularly when publicly funded health insurance is up for discussion.
See also "I got mine. Fuck you!"
So it goes. Naturally, my preference is for single payer. Either we are all on the same team, or we're not.
On to New Hampshire :
Bradblog
Anybody wanna stop the guessing and actually count the voters' ballots?...
Bob Koehler
First of all, before we get too enthusiastic about feminist solidarity or wax knowingly about New Hampshire Democrats’ traditional soft-heartedness toward the Clinton family, let’s ponder yet again the possibility of tainted results, which is such an unfun prospect most of the media can’t bear to remember that all the problems we’ve had with electronic voting machines — and Diebold machines in particular, which dominate New Hampshire polling places — remain unsolved.
Karl Rove
Whaa?? Karl Rove ?? On this Point ?? Now WHAT would this guy be doing here ??? Seem kinda like a put up job to you ? Why, except that Hillery is the most beatable dem, would Karl Rove be on this scent...?
Bottom line, if the polls (Pre AND Post) are reflected in the paper ballots used in some precincts, but not reflected by the Diebold machines used in other precincts...then you get to use the Phrase Prima Facie.
Fool me once, shame on you, etcetera.
Frosted Flake
Nice going, Frosty -- and so it starts all over again!?!
Of course, the Repugs want Hillary for a Dem presidential nominee, because they think that McCain can conquer her!
I sometimes wonder if the country is not already gone -- meaning when you see how deep-seated the criminality is (taking the knowleges of Sibel Edmonds into account), the continued and on-going assault to the Constitution, our liberties, decent voting, etc. -- how is there is a chance to turn it around if there is not Impeachment? A beginning!
P.S. Did anyone happen to remark at how coincidal Bush's visit to the Middle East and the "mad speed boat people of Iran" timing was?
"There is nothing to fear but fear itself."
Franklin D. Roosevelt
Unlike Mr. Conyers, they aren't afraid to prosecute.
I wonder what would happen to the Democratic Party nominating process, if Hillary was involved in a Just-Us department investigation, that forced her to remove herself from the race.
I think of how she was schooled in political law during Watergate, married to Bill during fellatiogate, and still allowed herself to be one of the people who DeLay blackmailed during the Scotland golf trip scandal. Talk about sloppy, I wonder what else they have?
Recently there was a story about an aide to Obama that was implicated in a criminal scheme. I wonder how far these criminal tentacles will go?
Mr. Conyers thinks he's able to quid pro quo all of their trouble away, even though his experience tells him otherwise.
I can't help but think of the incredibly fortunate timing of certain events. Bobby Kennedy's assassination. Nixon's pardon. The release of the hostages in 1981. Donna Rice/Gary Hart on a boat named Monkey Business. Monika and her knee pads. 9/11.
About the only thing they haven't tried is having the Democratic candidate arrested. But they never had a Just-us department and Congress so 'in their pocket' as this one, either.
If only Mr. Conyers was in a position to shape the debate in such a way that any possible investigation could be looked at as retaliation.
Protect yourself Mr. Conyers. If torture isn't torture, your off the table quid pro quo isn't worth the blood it's written in.
Impeach as if your freedom depended on it. If you don't, don't come crying to us, if they do.
Like my Father used to say, "You made your bed, you can lie in it." You knew it was filled with vipers when you crawled in.
Kucinich Wants Recount
Kucinich asks for NH Recount "in the interest of Election Integrity".
Good for Kucinich!
I'm actually not surprised by this, since he has standards of integrity.
Too bad so many others don't.
Kucinich IS the "CHANGE" America seeks...
... He just needs the Dem's to stop blocking him so that America can realize it too.
This is a perfect opportunity for Dennis to EXPOSE the "status quo" that has been shielding America from the shenanigans allowed and tolerated by members of not only the opposite Party, but especially by member of his own Party.
INVESTIGATE!
Rip back that veil of deceit that Conyers found but was too timid to "charge" on his own. John, are you with him? You've done the foundational work for years now, please don't abandon Dennis at this juncture. He really could use your help, hell(!) America could use your help... We're still waiting... !
D.K. should DEMAND investigations from every State that uses ANY form of electronic tabulating/vote recording machine to shine that long over due(hint, hint, John!) spotlight on how undemocratic our democratic system is when it is not owned by the voters but instead, by those who count the votes.
Americans have been lulled into submission by the past few phases of our Government until now, Kenyans fighting for their Democracy pales to America's feigned DUH!-mock-racy process. It makes me have to ask who wants their Democracy more? And my eyes don't lie... Americans, on an average, don't care to know what they're loosing... Americans just don't seem to care. And why is this, John? WHY? Possibly because they've been lead and feed a future of disillusionment by the "ESTABLISHMENT"?
John,
I hear your man talking up a good rhetoric about his "change" for America and how it's superior to Hillary's "change". But really, they both are "ESTABLISHMENT" candidates. They both endorse the status quo, but none would see that because one's a woman, the other's an African American. But I do! Breaking barriers isn't "change" when the results don't "CHANGE" the "status quo"!
The Party of the Status Quo...
Are the players who wish to stay in Iraq, invade other Nations, excuse warrantless wiretapping of American citizens, torture, lift Habeas Corpus Rights, restrict legal council, build walls at our "brown" border, encourage rendition, incarcerate without Due Process, tolerate the usurpation of Congress and sweeps accountability "OFF THE TABLE"
The Party of the Status Quo...
Wears both colors, can be found in any political affiliation, makes secret handshakes and pledges of silence, accepts lobby(SPECIAL INTERE$T$) bribes, and "CAN'T RECALL" their Oath of Office.

INVESTIGATE!
Unfortunately,
while the 19% of the vote that was cast on paper CAN be recounted, if the Court (was the judge a Bu$h appointee?) allows, the 81% that was (possibly) criminally altered by substitution of cards on the Diebold machines, or "Massaged" by Silvestro and Hajjar will only give the same lying results. ONLY paper ballots and hand count have the possibility of an HONEST election! HAVA was actually HAGS (Help America Get Screwed) and we've had two years to correct it, much of which was spent dithering, but the States STILL have time to disallow the machines before November, although the Primaries are lost causes. Sorry, Dennis - you weren't looking at what was happening when they invited you to bend over.
Kucinich calls for NH recount.

Well, it looks like this gets to go the same way as this.
That being said, I would like to point this is out from FM 22-100:
Direct Leadership Actions
5-1. Preparing to be a leader doesn’t get the job done; the test of your character and competence comes when you act, when you DO those things required of a leader.
5-2. The three broad leader actions that Chapters 1 and 2 introduced—influencing, operating, and improving—contain other activities. As with the skills and attributes discussed previously, none of these exist alone. Most of what you do as a leader is a mix of these actions. This manual talks about them individually to explain them more clearly; in practice they’re often too closely connected to sort out.
5-3. Remember that your actions say more about what kind of leader you are than anything else. Your people watch you all the time; you’re always on duty. And if there’s a disconnect between what you say and how you act, they’ll make up their minds about you—and act accordingly—based on how you act. It’s not good enough to talk the talk; you have to walk the walk.
2-35. Physical courage means overcoming fears of bodily harm and doing your duty. It’s the bravery that allows a soldier to take risks in combat in spite of the fear of wounds or death. Physical courage is what gets the soldier at Airborne School out the aircraft door. It’s what allows an infantryman to assault a bunker to save his buddies.
2-36. In contrast, moral courage is the willingness to stand firm on your values, principles, and convictions—even when threatened. It enables leaders to stand up for what they believe is right, regardless of the consequences. Leaders who take responsibility for their decisions and actions, even when things go wrong, display moral courage. Courageous leaders are willing to look critically inside themselves, consider new ideas, and change what needs changing.
Until Congress Acts on Election Integrity, there will Be Doubts
I’m sure we all saw this story about a study of how easy it is to hack electronic voting machines:
The problem is that we still have no way to verify the integrity of electronic voting. It could be that there was no “vote flipping” / computer glitches/ or other problems with the machines—but without a paper trail there is no way to prove the accuracy and the losing candidate(s) and their supporters will continue to doubt the results of elections until there is a mandatory paper trail. But a paper trail alone is not enough to assure voters that their vote has been accurately counted. There must be a concurrent system of a routine objective audit of a statistically valid sample of the paper ballots following each election, before the vote is officially certified.
These changes can only be mandated by Congress. One would think that members of Congress would WANT to be assured that their opponents couldn’t hack the voting machines and steal the elections from them. But what do I know…

or RESIGN !!!
Complicit, Cowardly and Disrespectful of those they "represent"
Bush may be the worst president ever, but the 109th and 110th congress are guilty of being the worst congresses ever. That they continue to put politics & election calculations before defending the Constitution, defending the people from having their liberties stripped from them, defending the treasury from robbery by the corrupt administration, and defending their own co-equal status is just plain indefensible.
There are no acceptable excuses for such a deliberate failure of duty. When the current or future Presidents seize total dictatorial power, the members of the 110th Congress can look in the mirror to remind themselves who is to blame. The most "Important Thing" that this Congress has done is to set the Precedent for unchecked Executive power. How far the President wishes to take that power is now solely up to the President--congress is too busy cowering in the corner to take notice.
186, 008 citizens who, unlike Congress, DO care about America's future have signed Representative Wexler's Petition.
Oil industry profits
Can anyone tell me how much gas was sold by Exxon/Mobil in the US vs. how much profits they made on that gas sold?
