Let Rep. Kucinich Debate Tonight

Submitted by JC on January 15, 2008 - 3:56pm.

From reading the comments on this blog, I know that many of you have been paying close attention to the conflict between NBC and Rep. Dennis Kucinich's campaign over his inclusion in tonight's debate in Nevada.  I just want to chime in on that and say that I agree that it is unfair and undemocratic of NBC to attempt to exclude Rep. Kucinich from the debate.  (For the moment, it looks like he will be included thanks to a District Court judge's ruling yesterday, though NBC is currently appealing the decision.)

Although I have endorsed Sen. Obama and hope to see him as our nominee, I hope that NBC will reconsider its position and allow Rep. Kucinich to debate.  The primary election process is one of the most important ways in which our party can examine the matters most important to us, especially those issues on which we find difference of opinion.  Rep. Kucinich brings a perspective to the debates that is important for all of us to hear, including his fellow presidential candidates.

His Importaint message is

Save the world,

Begin Change NOW With Cheney Impeachment Hearings

By an overwhelming 79%-12% margin, Americans want to change the disastrous direction George Bush and Dick Cheney have taken us. But there's no need to wait until January 2009 - we can begin change now with impeachment.

Rep. Robert Wexler (D-FL) is organizing his colleagues to ask House Judiciary Committee Chairman John Conyers to begin Cheney impeachment hearings, and he needs our help.

We're asking other Judiciary Committee Members to co-sign Wexler's letter to Conyers, and we're asking the rest of Congress to send their own letters to Conyers. Please email your Congressmember here:
http://www.democrats.com/peoplesemailnetwork/125

On Wednesday, please call your Congressmember through the Capitol Hill Switchboard (202) 224-3121, toll-free at 1-800-828-0498, or directly (http://www.democrats.com/congress). Tell your Congressmember to urge Chairman Conyers to begin impeachment hearings for Dick Cheney. Then tell your friends and call and email the media.

189,441 Citizens Have Signed Representative Wexler's Petition

Don't let their voices be muzzled.

It's called Democracy!

Everyone who is running should be allowed in every debate.
Not just who the media says. This is why I don't watch tv. Pretty sad for America who goes around pretending to spread democracy.

Also "Unfair & Undemocratic"--Muzzling of Dissent (per ACLU)

Catherine Crump, staff attorney for the ACLU wrote Unconstitutional Acts to Protect the President from Protestors:

"...In the waning days of this administration’s tenure, President Bush’s lack of interest in opinions contrary to his own is as striking as ever. Most recently in New Mexico, a group of peaceful demonstrators was removed from the president’s sight, continuing the administration’s long-held tradition that dissenters should be neither seen nor heard. Sound undemocratic? Indeed..."

"...Last August...The peaceful demonstrators’ attempt at free speech was quickly squashed when police officers forced them to stay at least 150 yards away from the motorcade route, walling them off by placing numerous police cars and officers on horseback between the protesters and the president. Meanwhile, a group of Bush supporters was allowed to stand right along the motorcade route, where their "God Bless George Bush! We pray for you!" sign was in plain view of both Bush and the journalists accompanying him..."

"...These incidents of censorship appear to be dictated by White House policy... It’s easy to see why presidents would want to be pictured surrounded by adoring supporters...But the desire to look good does not justify treating members of the public like extras in a campaign commercial rather than citizens with a protected constitutional right to engage in speech of their own. Shielding the president from all criticism is an unsound and undemocratic policy that violates the Constitution. The First Amendment prohibits the government from "abridging the freedom of speech."

Whether it's a television network deciding to exclude a Presidential candidate--with the passive approval of the Political Parties involved, or whether it's a President using police to silence and hide protestors from cameras--the principle is the same--the First Amendment rights of citizens are being increasingly violated, while Congress, and the political parties have been standing passively by watching.

BTW - Is the action

of excluding dissent from the view of the pResident and/or the TV audience an impeachable offense? It is DEFINITELY contrary to the letter, spirit, and intent of the Constitution! No matter how popular or unpopular our ideas are, we have a right to be heard, as long as we do it politely and offer no violence. The fact that non-violent protests are almost routinely met with violent activity on the part of Police - people who are supposed to enforce the LAW, not the whims of the powerful, is reprehensible in the extreme, and in a sane society would be punishable under the statutes concerning "Battery."

Thank you for sharing your feelings on this issue

Chairman Conyers

I think that this particular incident is indicative of a pattern and larger problem that needs to be addressed by Congress. We have the problem of big media and big money deciding who our presidents will be. It's a very serious issue, and I hope you and your colleagues will take some steps to address this.

Kucinich has been marginalized thoughout this entire campaign, and he deserves more respect than this - the voters have the right to hear from a candidate with integrity.

Well, I knew it would turn out this way afterall

Nevada Supreme Court Says MSNBC Can Bar Kucinich From Candidate Debate

DISGUSTING. I wrote MSNBC explaining why I wouldn't be watching the Nevada debate tonight.

I sent a donation to Kucinich to try to cover his costs for the NH recount, and for the expense of keeping up the fight despite the constant marginalization. And because I believe he should be President.

I also sent Wexler a donation to support his impeachment efforts. I saw him on the House floor tonight, and he was EXCELLENT! - he got some applause from the gallery.

Wexler is also fighting the sale of weapons to Saudi Arabia.

Chairman Conyers, it's putting up a fight in the face of injustice that earns the respect of the U.S. citizens. But, you know that, since you earned it once. Please, earn it again by supporting impeachment now!

I was near tears when I learned Kucinich would not be a

part of the debates. Corporations have the right to make and sell their products -- that's all. They have NO right to be calling the shots in elections or other ways. Of course, we all know GE is a big time player in the military weapons manufacturer -- but nothing but nothing gives them the right to interfere in American election processes.

If you want to boycott, write letters, etc. to GE, here is the answer (see comments).

Thanks for posting that link, tahoe

At least maybe I can try to constructively focus my rage.

This one is for GE and NBC http://planetsmilies.net/angry-smiley-8031.gif

This one is for Walt Disney and ABC http://planetsmilies.net/angry-smiley-8031.gif

And this one is for Conyers for not starting impeachment http://planetsmilies.net/angry-smiley-8031.gif

My feelings exactly feline

Except I think we need a bunch more of those little fellows. There's a lot of companies, and people I'm pissed at.

Looks like the people will never get to actually pick their candidate.

I agree

on both points.

I sent this email to GE. I hope that everyone does likewise

I shall no longer be watching NBC or any of its affiliates. I shall no longer be purchasing any of your products, and I shall be advising all my friends and acquaintances to act likewise.

WHY?

Because your action in excluding Dennis Kucinich from the Nevada debate is a stench in the nostrils of any right thinking person. He is NOT my favorite candidate, but he does have some ideas that I support, and he has a right to be heard. Your unilateral exclusion of his voice shows how corrupt and un-American you are, and I shall no longer allow any of my perfectly good cash to flow into your greedy coffers. I sincerely hope that all patriotic AMERICANS act in the same manner, since the cash register is the only thing you can understand.

I hope this link works for those who missed Wexler

Thanks feline

I'm going to watch it first thing in the morning to start my day off right.

I've given up on today, and to think when I went and voted, I was so happy to be able to vote for Dennis, and the only political sign in the area was one for Dennis. Sure brought a smile to my face. How quickly emotions can change.

John Conyers...

Did you sign up yet?

You can lead a republican to the truth, but you can't make him think it...

"Hit it harder Mark, it's flickering!"

When I was a young feller, I wasn't always what you could call a role model. When I wasn't acting like a juvenile, I was pretty delinquent.

I remember this one time, the night before Holloween about 1971, my brother and I were out creating mischief with a couple other neer-do-wells. Somewhere, we'd found a lead filled pipe that was perfect for knocking out street lights. All you had to do was whack it a good one about waste high, and the light would suddenly go out. Minutes later it would go back on.

Since I was the youngest, I got to watch as the other guys took turns whacking telephone poles up and down the backstreets of Brushton. At last, when we were at the perfect spot, they handed the pipe to me and said "go for it". Little did I know, but this particular pole was the "King of Telephone Poles". It was the one pole in town nobody had successfully kicked or whacked, out.

Using both hands, I commenced to whacking. After about five good solid hits, I heard my brother say, "Hit it harder Mark, it's flickering!" Encouraged, I continued, convinced that the next good whack would bring success.

Suddenly, the beam of a flashlight hit me square in the eyes as I heard a voice say, "You boys better quit that and get outta here or I'll shoot!" It appears that we weren't the first delinquents to exact vengeance on that particular pole, and when I followed the beam of the flashlight back to it's owner, what I saw was a .38 pistol in the hand of my Seventh Grade Science teacher, Mr. Ranieri.

The look in his eyes told me that I probably should back away from the pole slowly. I complied meekly as I heard the running footsteps of my comrades retreating in the distance. Needless to say, I wasn't his favorite pupil after that.

I don't know why, but Mr. Conyers posting reminded me of my brother telling me to hit the pole harder. By acknowledging our concerns as he wrote a "for the record" statement supporting Mr. Kucinich, Mr. Conyers stance against impeachment, flickered.

After a year of whacking at the anti-impeachment pole, the efforts of true Patriots like Mr. Kucinich, and incessant bloggers, are forcing people like Mr. Conyers to acknowledge that impeachment is more than a passing fad that can be damage controlled away.

In the case of the stubborn telephone pole, hitting it harder wasn't exactly the answer. But the people we're dealing with today aren't verified WWII heroes, as was my old science teacher. I later learned that I made a very wise decision when I assessed the look in his eyes.

In this case, our constant whacking is beginning to pay off. If it weren't, his post would probably be less topical, and much more frivolous.

Keep whacking at the anti-impeachment pole, it's flickering. Good job Mr. Kucinich. Keep up the good work.

And Mr. Conyers...thank you for accepting that we HAVE the courage of our convictions, even if it was an act of self defense.

There is still time to make a difference. Allow impeachment to proceed, 'cause we ain't gonna stop whacking, this isn't 1971 anymore.

Angry Voters in Michigan

IMHO, the underreported, and/or missed story of the Michigan primary is how many Michigan Democrats are angry about being disenfranchised by the DNC and boycotted by the Democratic Presidential Candidates. The media and the Democratic Party may well be underestimating how angry MI Dems are about it and the consequences it may have on the general election. I do know that no one from the national media was asking voters any questions about who they voted for or why in my voting location (with multiple precincts).

Here are some excerpts from a column by Chris Christoff in the Free Press Angry Voters Could Mean Trouble for the Dems:

”…Now that Michigan's primary is history, Kimberly Emmert is the kind of voter who could give nightmares to Democrats aching to win the White House...(she) said she always has voted Democratic but planned to vote for Mitt Romney in the Republican primary. She's miffed that there was little choice on the Democratic primary ballot…And she said she won't vote Democratic in November, either, ‘ believe we should have representation, and I believe my vote should count…’

“…Emmert echoes the sentiments of many for whom voting in the Democratic primary was like sunbathing in a parka… While Republicans saw their top candidates lavish attention on them and the state, Democrats could only stew over the absence of campaigning from Democratic front-runners…”

"Voter Dwayne Plummer, 45, of Detroit said he was disappointed that he could not vote for Barack Obama, who along with challenger John Edwards withdrew his name from the Democratic ballot… "It's like we were overlooked, especially with the bad situation we're in now," he said, referring to Michigan's stagnant economy. "You need a lot of support, people to come talk to us."Plummer added, "It could hurt us. You have a lot of Democrats, but they could go to the Republican side."

"State Republican Party Chairman Saul Anuzis called the primary a huge success because Republican candidates put a national spotlight on the economy and Michigan's beleaguered auto industry. Anuzis said as a Michigander, he would have liked to see Democrats campaigning in the state. He said as GOP leader, "I'm grinning ear to ear with the idea the Democrats publicly boycotted Michigan.” Anuzis said that gives Republicans ammunition to blast the Democratic nominee for ignoring Michigan in January."

Yep, Democrats, it’s not nice—or very smart--to disrespect and disenfranchise the voters in one (or more states) just to please the DNC and to pander to the voters of two relatively small population states. BTW, the Democratic Presidential Candidate frontrunners were quick to bow to the DNC rules but they weren't as concerned about standing up for their colleague and fellow Candidate, Rep. Kucinich--they didn't boycott the debate like they boycotted the voters of MI.

Shut off your cable.

It wasn't long after George Bush took office, when people like Matt Liar and Brian Gumball began mispronouncing nukular. George couldn't pronounce it right, so they weren't going to pronounce it right either.

At that point, I knew we were in deep shit. I haven't had cable or dish since then.

Knowing what we know about the MSM, if we are to be the guiding influence in our children's lives, these massive ideology shaping entities, must be carefully excorcised from their lives.

Since America's economy is in the tank, and George's war will continue increasing the strain on the world's ready supply of oil, you might need that bill money for fuel oil or gasoline.

You'll be surprised how quickly you'll adapt to life without cable.

Another thing about it? I haven't seen one American political campaign commercial, on any of the Canadian Channels my antenna picks up.

That in itself, is a bonus worth it's weight in gold.

Thank you

Democracy deserves voices, otherwise you get "zoneontd" free speach and controlled information telling you who and why to vote, sorta like we have NOW! Hugo Chaves should be very impressed, NO?

Congressman,
It isn't who one votes for, it's who they CAN vote for, and IF they vote, will it count? Problems for another Congress, it seems. The 110th is far too busy on the 2008 elections...
