One Day Until Victory (Let's Close the Deal Together)

I have been through a lot of elections. I have seen Democrats and Republicans win big and lose big. But I have little doubt that with one day to go, Democrats are poised to retake the House and very possibly the Senate as well. Simply put, the American people - Democrats, Republicans, and Independents; Progressives, Moderates, and Conservatives - are sick of abusive one party rule and want to restore checks and balances.

The fact that Karl Rove - the same Karl Rove who predicted winning 400 or more electoral votes in 2000, and led his boss to the smallest second term victory of a war time president in history in 2004 - is predicting victory means little. The fact that the national Republican party - the one known for vote purging, voter suppression and phone jamming - is unleashing unethical and possibly illegal robo-calls is also not unexpected.

The latest set of national polls do not give me any pause whatsoever. The fact that some conservative Republicans have finally decided to hold their nose and vote is not a surprise. The fact that some GOP leaning "independents" have told pollsters they don't like John Kerry is no shock. Many polls, including the latest CNN poll has Bush down to 35% and Democrats with a 20% lead in the generic poll, continue to show a distinct Democratic advantage. (See also the Newsweek, Fox, and Time [pdf] polls).

Much of the difference in the polls revolves around whether pollsters predict Democrats to turn out to vote in large numbers. That's something we control. Rather than giving me concern, these events merely cause me to redouble my efforts until the polls close tomorrow. I will be doing radio call-ins, GOTV, rallies, and even going door to door. In my own state of Michigan I look forward to a smashing victory up and down the ballot, led by our great Governor Jennifer Granholm and our fantastic Senator Debbie Stabenow.

You have been with me since the beginning. You were with me when we asked "What Went Wrong in Ohio." You were with me when we held historic hearings in the basement on the Downing Street Minutes and when more than 500,000 of you joined me in asking the president about this documentary evidence. You were with me when we held more hearings asking how our own government could have outed a CIA Agent. You were with me when recruited 500 election protection volunteers and raised $50,000 for John Cranley, Larry Kissel and Jerry McNerney, who will be joining me in Congress next year.

Now I want to ask you one last favor, let's stop any unproductive and unnecessary second guessing and close the deal together. I know Democrats are famous for going out of their way to find things to worry about, but there comes a time when we simply need to declare that we are proud to be Democrats and roll up our sleeves together. Now is that time.

Here is what I asked my supporters to do this morning, and I am asking you to do now:

First, Vote.

Second, make sure everyone in your family and your friends vote. Call them now.

Third, if you can, help us on our final drive to Get Out the Vote. To volunteer to help out today or on election day, you can go to the DCCC volunteer site. You can also contact your local Democratic Campaign to see how you can help on election day.

Fourth, if you experience or see any irregularities, immediately call 1-888-DEM-VOTE (1-888-336-8683). You can also call this number to obtain information on poll locations. We're not going to sit by and let anyone steal our votes this time.

Finally, lets check out the returns together. My web site will post information on how you can get breaking news on the election returns.

The issues are on our side. The candidates are on our side. The energy is on our side. Even demographics are on our side. On Tuesday, the American people will be on our side.

Confident we will win

Thanks, Congressman Conyers. I needed that!

I'm on my way right now to the Democratic office that needs my help now, and I'll be available to them tomorrow all day.

We're in this for the WIN!!!

GO TEAM!

Thank you.

Volunteering

I have been volunteering with MoveOn for their Call for Change. It's my first time to volunteer for an election, but this election means so much.
I never thought my country would fall so fast from freedom to tyranny. I hate to say it though...I do not trust the republicans not to have a last minute dirty trick. The Trolls that infest the liberal blogs have been obsessing on Kerry. Anything to make a nasty point.

Lets all think positive thoughts and vote, take five people with you..so they can vote.

``````````` terra````````
Republicans care about their belly anmd our souls...Democrats care about their souls and our bellies.
Thank you, once again, Congressman Conyers, for your many
uplifting words. Yes, we have been WITH you straight down the line and DAMN proud of it, and we will be with you to the END. Yes, I, too, have heard about those "robo-calls" -- it couldn't be much more unscrupulous! Yes, too, to the wanton abstractions of Kerry's words -- which were grabbed and taken totally out of context. Who, here, would believe that Kerry truly would belittle our soliders in any way, shape or form? He was likening their demise as under the Bush regime. That was his point.
The candidates you have deemed worthy are also excellent -- I received a very heart-felt response from Larry Kissell.
And, finally, yes, again, I am proud to be a Democrat for all the humane compassions that real Democrats stand for.
On the eve of our crucial mid-term elections and all its significance, I thank you from the bottom of my heart for your support, understanding and concerns for all us and our AMERICA.
With kind and loving regards to you and to all of us.
We'll always be with you, JC
A lot of these races will be very close, especially in the House. Volunteering for GOTV on Election Day is very important, just a few more phone calls in each district could make the difference between winning or losing several House seats. I'll be phonebanking GOTV for Jon Tester in Montana, we need the Senate too.
Thank you for sending us into Election Day with one of your most eloquent posts, JC.
The Assault Begins.......
It's not just the voting, it's actually getting others to go with you to the polls today. If ever there was an important election and you could pick which one to vote in, this would be the one. Do not let your friends and family, neighbors and acquaintances, strangers and supermarket shoppers sit idly by, whilst the Constitution is burning. They will regret not taking part and fulfilling their role in history, for this is history in the making. It is the day when America has awakened: so punch the clock and let's get to work by sending a loud and clear message.
We have gone over the scenarios. We know the stakes. We know their tactics and we are implementing countermeasures. We are well trained in spotting deception and trickery. We only need to do one more thing, act and execute our civil duty (and your one last freedom still hanging in there by a thread) and vote.
We are well trained and we know we cannot stop there. We must multiply our vote by getting other eligible registered voters out to vote. This is the key to victory: voter turnout. I won't belabor the high price that is already paid so that we can have the freedom to vote and choose our representatives, but it is disheartening to see those who do not vote, dishonor those who have paid that price for them.
Factoid: (Logically rearrangement of data mine)
Year- 1998 [Congressional Election Year]
Population- 280,298,524
VAP- 210,446,120 (Voting Age Pop.)
Registered- 141,850,558
Total votes- 73,117,022
Reg/VAP- 67.4%
Vote/Reg- 51.5%
Vote/VAP- 34.7%
and
Motivating Voters
Voter apathy is key to the phenomenal ascent of the theocratic right in the U.S. government.
"With the apathy that exists today, a small, well-organized minority can influence the selection of candidates to an astonishing degree."
who said this?
Why it was nut job extradinaire Pat Robertson in 1990.
Doing the math.
Hypothetically, let's say there is a close race and the final is 49.5% to 47.8% with 2.7% going to spoilage, write-ins or third party's. The difference between the winner and the loser is 1.7 percentage points. But only 34.7% of voting age people actually cast a ballot, making that 1.7 pecent of ("of" means times) 34.7%, which therefore means 0.59% of all voting age persons or 0.88% of total registered voters made the final difference in the outcome.
If only one person out of 100 asked showed up to vote, then the victory would swing the other way. It is up to us now and duty to our country calls. Send a message to the war criminals in the White House and Congress that we mean to take our country back.
History is in the making today and action is called for.
Vote. It is our right and it is our duty.
Get others to come with you. It is their right and it is their duty. Godspeed.
Good, Reed.
Very good. This goes in the manual.
I appreciate this forum. And the guys who work here.
Postscript ; Dialup net access down here last thiry hours. Interested in how widespread this event was.
Hello
I'm home on my lunch break from working at the polls and checking in on my Favorite Blogs...and I have to say that every thing is going great at my precinct. I helped set up the Diebold AVU unit and have been the happy poll worker. Curious to see what is happening across the nation knowing that my bubble is clean, so far(knock on wood). And low and behold I see reports about intimidation, misinformation, disenfranchisement, broken scanners, etc. Some of which is not too surprising...but really unnecessary if you think about it.
Desperation to influence voters and assistance hot lines is uncalled for. This is about our democracy process. I'm surprised that popular personalities would actually PROMOTE illegal activity and pass it off as democracy. It is inexcusable and how they reason it, justify it to themselves is beyond me. It is indefensible. They know what they are doing. Trust me. They know. It's part of their plan to screw with our democratic process.
So I have one question, not why, but what, exactly, is the legacy that they wish to inspire the next generation to come after their shenanigans? Because what they engage in isn't a genuine democratic process when it's filled with their lies and deceit and obstruction, now is it?
It's a shame that their partisanship sinks to such a deep level. It simply can sink Democracy all together. And is that the American value they wish to pass on?
CONGRATULATIONS, CHAIRMAN CONYERS!
16 House pick ups so far and we're not through kicking more House Republicans out of power yet.
Well, there is good news and bad news.
The bad news is Joe Lieberman is back and more powerful than ever. The good news is, it looks as though there are now fifty Democrats in the Senate, fourty nine Rebels, and Joe. This is much better than it could have been. Though it could have been much better.
And of course, the House is in the bag.
Pats on the back all around. Congratulations to Congressman Conyers on account of another BIG win. Is that about 21 in a row, now?
Now seems the time to make a couple obvious suggestions. I suggest everyone notice our job descriptions have just changed. We now get to start actually fixing the damage that has so horrified so many for so long. This is work. Sorry about that. And, we may need to change our methods to get it done. Not much, but some.
To begin with, I'm going to write a couple notes expressing my thanks to a couple politicians who did not win. One to Lamont, who spent $12,000,000 or more, most of it his, and made a huge contribution to our success. The other to Simpson, who ran on a shoestring in a district the party abandoned against a well known incumbant of long tenure, and managed to aquire one-third of the Vote.
After this, I am going to write Ms. Pelosi and ask if she was serious when she said there would be no impeachment. And is it automatic that she would be the Speaker, or would there be a Vote. And if there were, would there be any other issue.
I appreciate this forum.
Speak of the Devil, and Nancy, of course.
One Hundred Hours.
Hmmm...
"I want my grandchild to be born into an America whose government honors its duty for accountability and oversight."
I Wonder what that means....
And I'm going to ask.
