Now the Hard Part Begins
We did it! We won at least 29 House seats and took the majority. We won 6 Senate seats and took back the Senate too, not to mention 28 Governors and several more statehouses. We had incredible turnout of Democratic voters across the country. Thanks to you, we had a vigorous election protection program in place to fight those who would restrict our right to vote. We ran a positive campaign on the issues that really matter to American voters.
The past two years we have worked very hard to bring a new majority to Congress and to restore accountability in Washington. We have fought together on issues such as the unanswered irregularities in the Ohio presidential election, the scandal of the Downing Street Minutes, the shame of outing a CIA agent, and much more. Together we proved that a number of dedicated online activists, working in conjunction with a single congressman, could become a force to be reckoned with.
Although we won back control of Congress, none of us should delude ourselves into thinking that running the legislative branch in a nation wracked by years of one party rule will be easy. We need to put aside any thought of anger or payback. Instead we need to focus on identifying and correcting abuses and pass legislation which serves the interests of the American people.
We also need to recapture the White House in 2008 and maintain and expand our majorities in the Congress. In order to achieve these goals we need to be totally united as a Party. It is fine to debate and argue behind closed doors and among ourselves, but at the end of the day, we owe it to the American people to unite and lead.
Thus, in my opinion it serve,s no one,s interests but the Republicans for anyone, including my friend James Carville, to suggest dumping DNC Chairman Dean less than three days after the most sweeping Democratic Congressional victory in more than thirty years. As many of you also know, I have agreed with Speaker-to-be Pelosi that impeachment is off the table. Instead, we agree that oversight, accountability and checks and balances - which have been sorely lacking for the last six years - must occur. I have nothing but respect for those who might disagree, but that is where I come out.
Having devoted a considerable amount of time and attention to detailing the many abuses of the Bush Administration, I firmly believe that we have brought these matters to the attention of the American people and the mainstream media, and that their verdict was reflected in the elections on November 7. I consider the now famous "basement hearings" and the issuance of my "Constitution in Crisis" Report to be among the watershed achievements of my more than forty years in Congress.
I also remain committed to the seminal issue of election reform. As one who held several hearings in the immediate aftermath of the Ohio debacle and went on to author "What Went Wrong in Ohio," I believe more than ever that we need a paper trail on voting machines. We also need to strengthen our laws to put an end to intimidation schemes, like the stealth robo-calls voters received before the election. I intend to introduce legislation next Congress concerning these matters.
Additionally, none of us should underestimate the continued anger and vitriol of our political opponents, even after the election they are engaged in a permanent campaign to discredit Democrats and thwart our agenda of change. You need to go no further than the November 9 editorial in the supposedly mainstream Investors Business Daily, which smeared not only me but my constituents, writing, "[Michigan congressman John] Conyers led the defense of Bill Clinton in last decade's impeachment hearings and is clearly out for blood. So are many of the constituents he serves." Pejorative and prejudiced statements like this should have no place in our political discourse.
I am hopeful that I will be selected as Chairman of the House Judiciary Committee. The Judiciary Committee is one of the most important committees in the House, and has jurisdiction over the Justice Department, the civil rights laws, criminal laws, the civil justice system, the courts, immigration laws, antitrust laws, patent and copyright laws, bankruptcy laws, administrative law, and Constitutional amendments. If I am selected as Chair, I believe it will place us in a position to make real and meaningful changes for the good of the American people.
We remain in this together, and I continue to look forward to receiving your ideas, your support, and your advice in the coming months and years.
Your Friend,
John Conyers, Jr.

Sorry, my bike and hunting rifle comment was my slight injection of humor, which I should never attempt before having my coffee!
Feline
Actually, if the Crimes of this Administration weren't so grievous, your comments would be hilarious! But, in light of the fact that these thugs have commited the grossest of High-Crimes and Misdemeanors, it will most likely never happen. It had better NOT happen.
BTW, there is a website called HeadsOnPikes.
All of this Regime's heads are shown placed on a fictitious, but strangely satisfying, Pike!

O K I still love you but I don,t understand your jokes!(<:
That bike and rifle comment would have
gotten you tasered at UCLA, feline.
Fortunately, we have a taser too, the new People Power Model 2006.
Sure, it was kind of pricey at $500 million dollars, but it has a lifetime warranty.
Stay tuned for the YouTube video when we use it on Bush and Cheney and everyone else in that 9/11 Traveling Rodeo from Hell they call an administration.
Quite a few hits Congressman.
Extending on that theme, I got some links here.
Frank is frank
I don't have to agree on every point to get along with Frank.
And it is going to happen, regardless of what Congress hopes
It is not like there is any shortage of ammunition.
But then again, maybe they meant to say EXACTLY what they did.
And on top of everything else
Which tends to make that report kinda useless.....Don't it.
There is one good thing about morons. They provide less ons. And lessons make you smarter. So, now, we are.

must have had his morning coffee before he wrote that thunder and lightning HuffPo article.
WOW.
The hard part begins...
I totally agree!! And I believe that the American people will be watching closely the next 2 yrs to see what we accomplish with real issues that affect them.(i.e. raising the minimum wage; repealing the oil company's tax breaks; changing the Medicare prescription laws; and Iraq).
We must not tie up our system with impeachment per se. But we can & must proceed with oversight hearings!
We won this election with not only the "left wing" of the party . But also with Moderate Republicans & Independents who will get turned off by impeachment and probably go back to voting Republican in 2008.That is unless we can really show them a party that gets results as opposed to one which just gets revenge.
Accountability
Democratic Greyhound
I am so terribly disappointed that you, and your fellow Democrats in Congress, may now back off from investigating the absolutely unconstitutional and shameless conduct of the Bush White House. All for the sake of appearing "bipartisan" and "forward-thinking" to the publiv via our corporate-controlled media.
There will be no future (certainly not a bright one) for the Democrats if they don't respect the will of the electorate and hold the Republicans accountable. On the heels of today's big news story, speaking to the existence of documents that show Bush clearly signed off on torture, your letter (and the Democratic bosses' attempt to circumvent controversy) are extremely disturbing.
Ah! Here is what I was looking for.
Here is the list. And we aint on it.
And niether are the democrats.
Maybe it would help if we all said one thing (yeah, I know, it's a streach) in unison (yeah, I know, high fantasy). But let's give it a try :
PRESIDENT PELOSI
There. Does that make everybody happy?
Frosted Flake
I'm done for the day.
I wish the Democrats Tactically Were as Good As the Republicans
It seems to me while impeachment may not have been the immediate goal, passing of progressive legislations, accountability, withdrawal from Iraq, A jobs program, drug reform, a Wealth Tax, National Health Insurance are. If Democrats are worth anything they stand for something not for simply throwing the other team out.
Impeachment could be the stick and the above the carrot. By doing what you did and craving respectability and you and Nancy Pelosi made it easier for your enemies and harder to hold them accountable. You also insulted Nancy Sheehan and others who lost their children in a needless war. Rather than saying anything about what you are not going to do, it would be better to simply act. Impeachment could be the cost of lack of cooperation.
I look forward to serious investigations of the administration and other useful domestic issues and oversight with you at the head of the Judiciary Committee. All of us are watching to see if Democrats are really different than Republicans or just talk a different line but support in reality mostly the same things.

If you won't, the States CAN
Mr. Conyers:
Perhaps you misunderstand the nature of american voters and Impeachment. This is NOT a request. We WILL have this brought before the House, whether our federal officials do it... or WE do it from the State Legislature.
Thomas Jefferson's "Manual on Parliamentary Practice and Rules of the House of Representatives"
Section 603, 5):
"There are various methods of setting an Impeachment into motion... ...By charges transmitted by a State Legislature, or a Grand Jury;"
http://inetresults.com/impeach/strategy.html
Simply put, this means ANY State Legislature may pass a Joint Resolution, and submit it to the U.S. House of Representatives as a Priviledged Bill. A Priviledged Bill means it supercedes ALL other business before the House, and must be actioned upon before any other business may proceed.
Sir, as you well know, several of the Northeastern states have long proud liberal histories. And given the extent of voter outrage, it will be simple enough to generate public pressure at the State levels to get such legislation passed in one or many states. Back home in individual states, beltway political power is no match for the power of local constituencies, and you know it. Likewise with California, Minnesota, and Illinois.
Do you, Madame Pelosi, or any other democratic members of the House REALLY want to have to face your constituents after this happens? It will be political suicide.
This IS going to happen. The Netroots will see to it that this becomes the Mother of all BlogStorms, and that the publicity is beyond saturated. Throw in MSNBC coverage from Kieth Olbermann, John Stewart, Bill Maher, and of course every talk show across America... I think you understand.
You cannot stop this. Attempt to at your own political peril. Now do the peoples' business, and uphold Constitutional Law.
Thanks for hope...
Kudos for a well said piece. I can only wonder why it has taken "we the people" so long to demand performance from our elected representatives. The problems we have today were predicted eons ago. When will we ever learn or better yet, take appropriate action?
"I see in the near future a crisis approaching that unnerves me and causes me to tremble for the safety of my country. As a result of the war, corporations have been enthroned and an era of corruption in high places will follow, and the money power of the country will endeavor to prolong its reign by working upon the prejudices of the people until all wealth is aggregated in a few hands and the Republic is destroyed. " (Lincoln, Letter to Col. William F. Elkins, November 21, 1864)
Remedy for Outlaw Government
As posted at http://karlssblog.blogspot.com/
It's very clear that the United States faces its biggest Law & Order crisis since the secession of the Southern states prior to the South Carolinian attack on Fort Sumter in 1861. But before continuing, let's look at this: The oath of office required by the sixth article of the Constitution of the United States, and as provided by section 2 of the act of May 13, 1884 (23 Stat. 22), to be administered to Members, Resident Commissioner, and Delegates of the House of Representatives, the text of which is carried in 5 U.S.C. 3331:
I, Loyal Citizen of the Republic, do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office on which I am about to enter. So help me God.
Those members of Congress who've stated impeachment is off the table have violated their oath and will do so again when they affirm the above oath on January 5, 2007. They will have lied to Congress and WE THE PEOPLE--AGAIN. Of further interest is the vote to install these corrupt liars into the most powerful positions in the House--All who voted for Pelosi as Speaker are now every bit as corrupt as she for installing an avowed corrupt liar. By lying to Congress, Pelosi and cohorts will violate US Laws related to Fraud and False Statements, Title 18, Chapter 47, Section 1001 and Conspiracy to Defraud the United States, Title 18, Chapter 19, Section 371. If we didn't have a completely outlaw government before, we will have one soon as the criminal Republican leaders of the House will be replaced by criminal Democrats.
There seems to be only one remedy: people power rising from the local and state level through a resolution passed by the statehouse demanding the House start impeachment procedings as a "Priviledge Bill." This initiative was started earlier in 2006 in Illinois--Illinois House Joint Resolution 125--and was highlighted at Daily Kos http://www.dailykos.com/story/2006/4/24/2820/90986. Apparently, this bill has many sponsors, but has just sat gathering dust, http://www.ilga.gov/legislation/BillStatus.asp?DocNum=125&GAID=8&DocTypeID=HJR&LegId=25794&SessionID=50. Now that we've had the Great Betrayal by Pelosi et al, it seems like the time is ripe to get this and other like resolutions pending in other states to a vote and start the process of reclaiming our government from both corrupt national parties.

the Deadline and the consequences. QUESTION: Is Vermont already taking action?
You have sold us out, Congressman Conyers
Mr. Conyers,
You have taken an oath to defend our constitution from all enemies, foreign and domestic. In that, you have clearly failed to do your job. Justice is "off the table?" This is completely unbelievable.
You and Nancy Pelosi have effectively said that Republican presidents can do no wrong. They are defacto dictators, who will not be held to account for the most grievous crimes of our lifetimes, including treason, Crimes Against the Peace, Crimes Against Humanity, numerous constitutional crimes, and a lengthy list that you know too well.
History will look back at your cute little "table" and judge you and the collaborators in Congress who let criminality pass for business as usual, and they will know.
That is why I will use you and Nancy Pelosi to make my case that a new political party, whose sole purpose is "Justice" is needed, and needed badly:
thejusticeparty.org
Democrats do not deserve our votes. That much is clear. Their party should disappear and be replaced with a party that actually opposes corruption and war for profit.
Congratulations!
Congressman Conyers,
I feel very proud and happy that a legislator of your high caliber will be in the leadership in the new Congress next year. I have followed your Congressional career and know you will continue to make us proud to be Democrats and Americans.
(When I was in Law School, many years ago, I had a part time job at the US Capitol, manning the sound system switchboard in the gallery when the Congress was in session at night. I modulated the speaker volume for the speakers, sometimes more than one at a time. I hope whomever is monitoring the system next year, they will turn up the volume when you take the podium so all members will hear you loud and clear!)
Thanks for being there!
Impeachment of Bush & Cheney, Inc
John-
I am deeply angered by the sudden Democratic party decision that "impeachment is off the table" for the criminals in the White House.
First of all, this isn't up to you, or Nancy Pelosi. You are a paid civil servant trusted to govern, and obliged to live by the laws of the land as defined in the Constitution of the United States, just like the rest of us. If you EVER forget that, I am sure we will help remind you, painfully.
Second, you have done nothing but PROVE beyond the shadow of a doubt, that you are just as complicit in the destruction of American Freedom as they are. LET ME STATE THAT AGAIN, SO THERE IS NO MISUNDERSTANDING: YOU ARE JUST AS COMPLICIT IN THE DESTRUCTION OF AMERICAN FREEDOM AS THE REPUBLICANS AND BUSH.
Third, people are NOT going to tolerate this systematic abuse of power forever. Don't get me wrong- I understand why this is occurring, thanks to the globalists pulling the strings of every politician in this country, for the sake of instituting world governance. MAKE NO MISTAKE- resistance is forming in many places across the country, at every level of government, and in secret.
CHOOSE YOUR SIDE MR. CONYERS.
David
I'm all for a powerful Resistance Movement...if such Movement is warranted. Meaning, if the subject of Impeachment does not come BACK 'on the table!'
If so...let me know where I can sign up! Cuz I shore am fed up!
Jewels...just got her strength back.
Gratitude for your leadership
Dear Rep. Conyers,
I am thrilled to bits to think that your integrity and leadership skills will finally have a chance to effect some long-needed changes in our poor benighted (by ghastly Bush Admin.) country.
When you called for an inquiry into the obviously rigged Ohio vote count in 2004 (among other states), and when you held the valuable Downing Street Memo hearings in the infamous basement, it just killed me that none of the major media were covering your work. At least, not in any detail or in a sustained way. If it hadn't been for blessed C-SPAN, none of us would have known much about your valiant efforts.
When the 2000 presidential election was stolen by a shamelessly partisan Supreme Court, I wrote many letters to editors complaining about most Americans' disgraceful apathy. I thought there should have been rioting in the streets, but people like me who pointed out the crime were laughed at as sore losers.
When Sen. Kerry was also robbed by Ken Blackwell and other conflict-of-interest officials, I again wrote scores of letters to media outlets and newspapers. But in 2004, those of us who spoke the truth were mocked as conspiracy nuts.
(What a tragic waste of a fine candidate, Sen. Kerry. And now, the rotten news media counts him out as an also-ran, insisting that voters want "new faces." How absurd and wrongheaded! Experience should count more than mere novelty.)
Thus, you will understand why I was so grateful for your fighting spirit and exposure of the outrageous fraud perpetrated
by Bush and his beastly crew. His "re-election" has cost us countless billions of dollars wasted on a misbegotten war, money that should have been spent on poor people at home. And of course, many thousands of lives wasted and families destroyed, both here and in Iraq.
As a former teacher, I saw what idiocy "No Child Left Behind" was. Neo-cons WANT poorly educated children because ignorant people will continue to vote for them and their awful agendas.
I know that you will do great things to help our country get back on track. Tragically, it will be so hard to get us out of Iraq. That monstrous war is practically impossible to close. I just hope the American public will understand that it is not Democrats' fault if it is a messy withdrawal, and remember WHO got us into this in the first place.
I appreciated your generosity in dropping for the moment the idea of impeaching Pres. Bush. As much as he deserves it (so much more than Clinton did!), it would be a distraction now when we have so many other problems. I also thank you for your intelligent remark regarding James Carville's insult to Chairman Howard Dean. That was so uncalled for and a pity James said such a stupid thing. YOU are always a gentleman, sir.
I should like to request that you add to your undoubtedly long list of things to do the matter of reinstating the environmental protections that Bush and his greedy corporate cronies emasculated. I realize that this may not be your immediate concern or within your normal purview, but I beseech you to encourage many others to work on this at once. Environmental degradation and animal species extinction has been hastened by Bush (and Reagan before him) to such a degree that countless millions of animals are literally starving to death right now, simply because we humans have been so greedy and selfish. Partly it is due to our insane insistence on having everything we want right now (such as SUVs and too much food), causing pollution; and partly it is because we hog so much land and destroy animals' habitat in the process.
Most Americans are so short-sighted on this issue. If you tell them about animals' suffering (such as arctic animals losing their habitat and thus starving), they seem to think it has nothing to do with them. Yet, if you read Rachel Carson or Jacques Cousteau or Robert Kennedy, Jr., you will know that the animals' extinction is only a short step from our own ruination. WE deserve to suffer; they don't. They did not do this to the planet. WE DID! And Carson, et. al., warned us 40 years ago! What fools we humans have been to ignore them, and now it is virtually too late. Still, we could save SOME of the beauty and health of this planet if we all try, if we ALL conserve. If not, we deserve our doom.
Please don't allow drilling in ANWAR. Please help bring back electric and other cars that don't use oil. Please care about animals' habitat and health. If we humans don't care about helping other species then we are truly damned.
I thank you, and I pray for your success and happiness. Bless you and your family. Keep up the good fight.
Warm Regards,
Eileen
I largely agree with most everything you have said! However, I
feel that investigations and impeachment proceedings are a priority, in that much of what you or I would hope to be accomplished will not or cannot be done with the executives now in control. These people, BushCo have set back environmental controls some 35 years over the progresses we had made by their encumbent greed.
I am, first of all, an animal lover. It sickens me to see animals suffer at our hands. The thought of an animal languishing in misery because of our callousness is something I have NEVER been able to stomach and NEVER will stomach! Animals, like children, are "innocent." Their only "fallacy(?)" is to seek "food" when hungry, but don't we?
But beyond my love for all animals, does not anyone consider the "eco-balance" that is involved? Human beings have long believed that they are "superior" to any other form of life. I have never been sure that I agree with that.
I have fought, in my way, for the safe-keeping of ANWAR all of these fretful years. And, I will continue to do so! I cannot express how sickened I am by ALL that has been and what is happening. It is, literally, heart-breaking.
What does it take to get it through the "thick" sculls of human beings that all "living" beings have a place on this earth and for a REASON?
Thank you for your wonderful post and one that I can genuinely relate to!
Animal suffering...
And while we are listing the crimes of suffering this Regime have imposed on living creatures, let us not forget TORTURE! That most barbaric and Medieval practice that was outlawed by the Geneva Convention et al for a reason! Humans do NOT deserve to suffer needlessly. Punishment can be inflicted without causing undue suffering.
We have five critters in our home, most of which we have rescued, and I love them, and all animals, dearly! But I do not agree with your opinions that Man deserves to suffer. We just need to wake up!
And yes, I can anticipate the remarks alluding to my declaration of a Revolutionary War. THAT would be an extreme and last resort.
Now I gotta go, cuz one of my kitties is standing on my head...literally.
Jewels
You're right, of course
Hi, Jewels, Sorry about my comment that we humans deserve to suffer. I did not mean it literally, or about ALL of us. I meant to make the point that animals are innocent of the crimes committed against Nature, and we are not. But of course, you are right, good people should not suffer, either. It is such a pity that the good have to suffer for what the evil ones do.
Bless you and your five critters! (Rescuing is the best way to get pets.)
Thanks for your useful remarks.
Well said, Tahoebasha, and thanks for your addition to my criticism of ecological damage done by this Administration.
I am in complete synch with you regarding our overblown self-importance. In fact, I have used virtually those same words about Mankind not being the superior beings they/we think they/we are, whenever I write one of my "cranky" letters to editors. I always say that if we WERE so darned smart, we would not have fouled our own nest and done all the other rotten things we do every day.
Take care.
It hasn't exactly been calm and peaceful around here
since JC delivered his Sermon on the Mount remarks to the assembled multitude of ConyersBloggers.
I think a different Golden Oldie from the New Testament is more appropriate right now:
"And they came to Jerusalem: and Jesus went into the temple, and began to cast out them that sold and bought in the temple, and overthrew the tables of the moneychangers, "Ye have made it a den of thieves!"
Different leader. Same principle.
Republican thieves and liars and criminals have plundered and defiled America's temple of government, and it is time to kick their asses out of that temple and into prison.
Any questions, JC?
I hope not, because the multitude is getting very restless.
You ain't just "whistling Dixie!
Clinton was "bled to death" for a dalliance - never any of our business anyhow! But here, we have real, "live" criminals and they are to be exonerated? What kind of mentality have we become when we can even attempt to sweep the multidinous crimes of BushCo under the carpet? I say, once again, WE THE PEOPLE, must speak up and act against this posture of our "newly" found government. Once again, IT IS UP TO US -- PERIOD!
Why is it off the table?
Who makes such a decision? Who announces that a part of the Constitution is suddenly off the table?
This only further fuels the paranoia so many of us feel that the whole thing is rigged.
Justice and revenge, no one has ever adequately explained the difference. Karma? But the need to impeach Bush goes beyond justice or revenge. First we need to do it for our own protection, our children's safety. Is there anything more important than that? Also, Bush needs to be impeached to help restore our nation's reputation and standing in the world.
Justice and or revenge is the least of it. Bush needs to be impeached for his own good and ours.
the cooler
Impeachment off the table !$&#*#$
Dear Congressman Conyers,
All I asked of you during the upcoming 110th Congress is that you act to return our government to a system based upon law. All other priorities are secondary and will follow as a natural consequence as long as we hold to that principle.
We need to affirm to the people and the World that the USA is governed by system of laws, not men and the secret interplay of power.
In a system base upon laws no one has the right to decide that impeachment is off the table if the evidence indicates that high crimes and misdemeanors were committed.
If you believe, and I know you do, that high crimes and misdemeanors were perpetrated by the Administration you are obligated to investigate these crimes and, if your beliefs are confirmed, to persue impeachment. If you fail to do that you are complicit in the crimes and should also be held accountable to the law.
I know you know what is right, please act accordingly. Thank you.
Impeachment off the table? Did I hear right?
Yes, now the hard part begins: realizing that the Democrats we worked so hard to elect earlier this month are completely useless and, worse, are actually aiding criminal activity. Sure didn't take them long to show their real character--or lack thereof.
Unless there's recently been an undercover Congressional inquiry into Bush's many transgressions and crimes and he was somehow found innocent--AND NONE OF US HEARD ANYTHING ABOUT IT--than how can Conyers say that impeachment is now off the table?
Which is the real Conyers--the one who only seven months ago was (rightly) calling for a Select Committee to look into the grounds for recommending President Bush,s impeachment, or the one who now, for reasons other than political ones no one can possibly fathom, says that impeachment is not to be considered. The answer obviously is this: that THERE IS NO REAL CONYERS--ONLY A TYPICAL POLITICIAN who will do anything to advance his own career rather than do what is right.
As we all know, if any president in history has committed "high crimes and misdemeanors" (that is, impeachable offenses) it is George W. Bush. I am unable to list all of them here as I can't go on forever! But by not calling for impeachment Conyers is essentially saying to this president, "Go ahead, continue to flout the law, we won't even consider doing anything about it". Gosh, Bush must be laughing hysterically about this. Every time he loses he wins!
And this is what we hoped for with a Democratic victory? Well, more clearly than ever the Democrats, and especially Conyers and Pelosi, have made it clear that they are simply untrustworthy, spineless excuses for leaders. Shame, shame, shame. Hopefully both of you will be punished the next time you are up for re-election and thrown out of office. No matter what you do from this point on you cannot redeem yourselves. Get a job that fits your (lack of) ability to lead, but please don't run again for Representative or Senator. Step aside for REAL leaders who are not afraid to stand up to the Chief Executor. Even better, you deserve to be immediately impeached yourselves, because ignoring doing anything about the Bush administration's horrible crimes against humanity is tantamount to abetting them!!
I'd love to know how Mr. Conyers can defend himself against the above. We're all waiting for your response...
See below for more damning evidence:

APN Interviews Conyers, Swanson, and Goodman
By Matthew Cardinale, Editor, Atlanta Progressive News (March 10, 2006)
(APN) ATLANTA - 30 US House Representatives have signed on as sponsors or co-sponsors of H. Res 635, which would create a Select Committee to look into the grounds for recommending President Bush,s impeachment, Atlanta Progressive News has learned.
"There has been massive support for House Resolution 635 from a very vigorous network of grassroots activists and people committed to holding the Bush Administration accountable for its widespread abuses of power," US Rep. John Conyers (D-MI) said in a statement prepared for Atlanta Progressive News.
The Center for Constitutional Rights (CCR) also released a book, Articles of Impeachment Against President Bush. The Center is extremely influential in high-profile court fights over issues such as wiretapping, the treatment of detainees by the US, and felon voting rights.

". . .we have found that there is substantial evidence the President, the Vice-President and other high ranking members of the Bush Administration misled Congress and the American people regarding the decision to go to war in Iraq; misstated and manipulated intelligence information regarding the justification for such war; countenanced torture and cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment in Iraq; and permitted inappropriate retaliation against critics of their Administration. There is at least a prima facie case that these actions that federal laws have been violated - from false statements to Congress to retaliating against Administration critics." -- John Conyers, Incoming Chairman of House Judiciary Committee.
And Now The Hard Part -> The Year Ahead
Mr. Chairman:
Your words are well put. You're assuaging the voters that this new Congress will be thoughtful and not into superficial paybacks, is the meaning I take.
I think you should follow Honest Abe's idea about Hewing to what's correct and letting the chips fall where they may.
Some of the most important work in the next Congress' first year will be investigating the serious abuses of the Administration, and then taking the appropriate action in light of the facts.
It is being fair and unbiased for you to say you cannot speak of what course to follow when you have not yet determined the truth.
A year from now, who knows what we will have seen come to light, and what we will know needs to be done.
Justice carries the sword as well as the scales.
IMPEACH!
Mr. Conyers, I have nothing but respect for the work you've done, but I feel really let down to hear that you've given up on impeaching the president. Obviously, you know way more about government than I do, but right now I don't really care about realities or practicalities. For the last 8 years the Bush administration, with the support of a Republican Congress and the media, have done some horrendous things. And they mostly got away with it. And, now that you've been given some power, it's not as if I'm not asking you to use that power and do something horrendous in return...I'm just expecting you to prosecute Bush's crimes to the maximum of your authority. That's called justice and accountability.

I don't know if you have to re-introduce the bill but we in California support your efforts at the National level while we work hard on the State level to get our bill, SB840, pushed forward again.
It doesn't hurt to keep reminding the public that Single Payer=Medicare for All is the only solution for the crisis which is only getting worse (as exemplified by the hurricane Katrina victims).
If you are successful in getting it passed before us, all the better, but we will try, also, in parallel fashion, to get it soon as a model for the rest of the country.
California is the 6th largest economy in the world and it would be a perfect pilot project to test the value of Single Payer.
We in Health Care for All-California are the first grassroots, totally volunteer organization to not only write comprehensive Single Payer legislation but also to get it passed through 2 hours of the Legislature. Of course, we had to deal with Mr. Schwarzenegger at the end who is well-financed by the health insurance and pharmaceutical industries. He'll be coming up with his own plan which I am sure will benefit those industries and not the people he governs.
As a progressive Democrat I would like to see the progressive agenda be out in the forefront of addressing long overdue domestic issues such as poverty, unemployment, civil rights issues and health care.
You are one of my heroes. Keep up the good work!

A Tale of Two Conyers
PART I
Congressman John Conyers, "The Constitution in Crisis", December 2005:
"In brief, we have found that there is substantial evidence the President, the Vice President and other high ranking members of the Bush Administration misled Congress and the American people regarding the decision to go to war with Iraq; misstated and manipulated intelligence information regarding the justification for such war; countenanced torture and cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment and other legal violations in Iraq; and permitted inappropriate retaliation against critics of their Administration.
"There is a prima facie case that these actions by the President, Vice-President and other members of the Bush Administration violated a number of federal laws, including (1) Committing a Fraud against the United States; (2) Making False Statements to Congress; (3) The War Powers Resolution; (4) Misuse of Government Funds; (5) federal laws and international treaties prohibiting torture and cruel, inhuman, and degrading treatment; (6) federal laws concerning retaliating against witnesses and other individuals; and (7) federal laws and regulations concerning leaking and other misuse of intelligence.
"While these charges clearly rise to the level of impeachable misconduct, because the Bush Administration and the Republican-controlled Congress have blocked the ability of Members to obtain information directly from the Administration concerning these matters, more investigatory authority is needed before recommendations can be made regarding specific Articles of Impeachment. As a result, we recommend that Congress establish a select committee with subpoena authority to investigate the misconduct of the Bush Administration with regard to the Iraq war detailed in this Report and report to the Committee on the Judiciary on possible impeachable offenses."
-- Congressman John Conyers, "The Constitution in Crisis", December 2005
PART II
Congressman John Conyers, November 2006:
"As many of you also know, I have agreed with Speaker-to-be Pelosi that impeachment is off the table. Instead, we agree that oversight, accountability and checks and balances - which have been sorely lacking for the last six years - must occur. I have nothing but respect for those who might disagree, but that is where I come out.
"Having devoted a considerable amount of time and attention to detailing the many abuses of the Bush Administration, I firmly believe that we have brought these matters to the attention of the American people and the mainstream media, and that their verdict was reflected in the elections on November 7. I consider the now famous "basement hearings" and the issuance of my "Constitution in Crisis" Report to be among the watershed achievements of my more than forty years in Congress."
-- Congressman John Conyers, November 2006
IF THEY DO
The Associated Press / Ipsos recently polled and reported on this question "How confident are you that President Bush and the Democrats in Congress can work together to solve the country's problems?"
I'm fully confident that anyone who tries to work with Bush will contribute to problems for this and many other countries. I get the impression I'm not alone: Americans just elected dozens of new Democrats and not a single new Republican. I would not have answered the question, had Ipsos asked it of me, because my view of the world was "off the table." The AP could teach Nancy Pelosi a thing or two about removing topics from the table.
Announcing that impeachment is off the table makes it sound like you either have no use for the rule of law and your "investigations" are predetermined charades, or like you are engaged in the same impeachable offense Bush is: lying to the American public (you're taking impeachment off the table, fully aware that it will climb back on as soon as you investigate any of a dozen crimes). You've left impeachment ever more prominently on the table.
Reporting a balanced story on those who do and those who do not worry that the Democrats will fail to work cooperatively with Bush: THAT effectively takes impeachment off the table. While Newsweek just found that a phenomenal 51 percent of Americans want impeachment, AP simply did not ask the question or did not report the results. (Support for impeaching Clinton, when the media and Congress were promoting nothing else, never got above 37 percent.)
The Democrats (and Republicans) can get to impeachment by any of several paths. They can launch an investigation of anything, send subpoenas to the White House, and then raise impeachment when the White House refuses the subpoenas. They can investigate using any number of House and Senate committees or a bipartisan select committee. Waxman or Kucinich could as easily take the lead as Conyers. Or another Democrat, perhaps even a newly elected Democrat, could cut to the chase, introduce articles of impeachment, and become an international hero.
If the Democrats do stand up to tyranny and restore the rule of law to our government, they will not only increase the likelihood of reducing global warming and nuclear proliferation before it's too late, not only bring back habeas corpus and the Bill of Rights, not only make the next war much more difficult to launch, but they will also sweep the 2008 elections and see their leaders admired and loved the world over. Conyers was overwhelmed with support and adulation and contributions when he merely talked about preliminary investigations and the media ignored him. The first Congress Member who supports impeachment will be virtually deified (as well as attacked and ridiculed by a very vocal minority).
So, if the Democrats are playing games until they have their committee chairs, if they're convinced that talking impeachment prior to the "investigations" will lead to fatal attacks from the media, if they're planning to do their jobs and defend our democracy come February, then there is hope for them and for us. And if we force them to take action, then there is hope for us and for them.
IF THEY DON'T
If the Democrats fail to defend the rule of law, if they imagine that we care nothing for our rights and freedoms and merely want them to pass domestic legislation that will be vetoed or signing-statemented, they will do as well in the next elections as they did after they looked the other way on Iran Contra. Pelosi has taken so many things off the table, including the idea of cutting off funding for the war, that she gives the impression of ultimately wanting the stretch out on the table and take a nap. If we allow her and her colleagues to do this, we will let down our nation and the world and we will tell future presidents that no law applies to them.
If the Democrats fail to fight for impeachment and peace, I for one will want nothing further to do with them. Come 2008 I will not vote, or I'll vote for a third party or write in the names of people I respect. I told a great many people in recent months to hold their noses and vote for lousy Democrats so that Conyers could chair Judiciary, and the Democrats could chair every committee, and the subpoenas and articles of impeachment could be placed on the table. If the Democrats refuse to be the opposition party that was just elected, they will be as quickly unelected. If the Democrats and Republicans fail to impeach this President and Vice President, they will remove impeachment from the U.S. Constitution and any remaining faith in our government from the minds of Americans.
I don't think it will come to this. I'm optimistic. And I'm optimistic because the solution to this riddle is not a proper analysis of the mendacity or corruption of Democrats in Congress. The solution is public action. The Democrats in Congress will not act without public pressure. But - unlike the Republican Congress we just rid ourselves of - they will act if there is public pressure. Let's apply it. Here's how: http://www.afterdowningstreet.org

You can lead a republican to the truth, but you can't make him think it...
Awesome... wallen
Thanks for your post. I'm glad to know that this subject is being disclosed and discussed on other websites.
That is precisely what needs to happen. Conyers, Pelosi, and company need to be exposed at every opportunity in hopes that this fraud will not be allowed to continue.
OMG... I love this communicative tool. Maybe now, a grass roots endeavor for "honest government" has the possibility to become a national movement and new reality.
Time is of the essence! Have we each sent a copy of Conyers' Newsletter to our address book... along with a link to this blog?
I think Mrs.Sheehan represents me very well.
Open letter to Representatives Pelosi and Conyers
Some points she didn't make, but I would.
1/ Impeachment is not punishment, it is removal.
2/ No one has a right to hold office in the United States.
3/ The purpose of the Constitution is to protect the people from the government, not to protect the government from the people.
4/ If we have to fight over this, people will get hurt.
I appreciate this forum.

I'm with you brother, my anger boils over this. This is not just a lie that we can just forgive and forget - PEOPLE DIED. Americans, patriotic Americans who volunteered to serve their country who never dreamed that their country would use them.
Thanks, Kid.
It's right out of 1984. It's like there's an extra layer of wierd these days, to get us ready for what tommorrow will be like. It's like we are supposed to react like it was a TV show, not a real threat at all.
Who should be Impeached?
The following two paragraphs are excerpts from an essay posted today on Lew Rockwell,s web site regarding impeachment. I found it thought provoking and offer it for your consideration and debate.
I do not discount for a moment the vicious and wicked deeds of the White House sociopaths who have, with only token objection from others, behaved like drunken SS-officers on a holiday for butchers. But it is time not only for Americans, but for the subjects of other nation-states as well, to look themselves in the face and ask why they have been willing not only to sanction such destructiveness, but to insist upon it as the highest expression of the "greatness" of the society in which they live.
Most Americans have failed to live up to their responsibilities under this alleged "social contract." This includes most Democrats who, throughout these past five years, have done little more than opportunistically await the day that they might recover the White House in order to continue the same statist agenda "under new management." You will not find the Democrats proposing repeal of the Patriot Act - or any of the other recently enacted additions to police-state powers - or the dismantling of the Homeland Security system. Neither will they do what any morally decent person would do in the conduct of a war against wholly innocent people: stop the killing. As Nanci Pelosi has expressed it, more money will be needed for the military, and the troops will be brought home but only after they have achieved victory, rhetoric that differs not one iota from that of George W. Bush. By ~ Butler Shaffer
To read Shaffer,s complete essay, go to: http://www.lewrockwell.com/shaffer/shaffer148.html
Now, if you concur with Mr. Shaffer that it is the American people who are to blame for our government,s atrocities ~ what can we do from here? If not, where do we go from here?
Hey Jackster
This is the longest thread that I have seen on this blog, and I have been here for quite a while.
The points that you bring forward have been discussed here often and we were all hoping that with the win , we would see some changes.
Most folks here are very informed and very active .
That shoe of blame needs to be put on elsewhere.
We are ALL patiently waiting for a response to our criticism of J C s, Impeachment is off the table comment.
All in shock by the way. It is extremely hard for any of us to comprehend the thought process that is going through the congressmans head.To this point we are waiting for an answer.
After sticking with this man for so long , it seems strange to even contemplate that J C would not be first in line to lob off a few heads. . Proves to me, after all these years,( I,m Getting Old) that I am still very capable of misjudgment!
You got that right Ron
Never seen this many posts in two days in my 3 years here- EVER. Never, ever.
People are really, really disgruntled and upset.
As we SHOULD be.
Citizen J
Hey ,I would not want the likes of Rusty , Frosty, You , and all the other Great folks that make up this blog, working against me.
That is exactly what,s going to happen to J C,if this crap keeps up!
I hope to hell that this is part of some undisclosed master plan ,that is yet to come to light!
One can only hope
And bombard them with letters- email and snail. Apparently, we will need to FORCE THE ISSUE, with little to no help from our elected representatives. Again.
I truly WANT to believe in Conyers, but my faith has been seriously shaken, which saddens me more than I can express here.
I'm a cynic at heart, which makes this crap even more distressing- the cynic in me is saying "SUCKER!!! You should KNOW better!".
HATE this new format for posts, by the way ADMIN- very, very difficult to see new posts, especially on long threads like this one. Sequential posts are much easier to read. This mess.... well, sucketh major ass, IMHO.
Then again, if Conyers continues down this path, maybe you guys won't have to worry about long threads anymore, cuz nobody will be here.
Something to ponder, JC. As another poster said, your credibility took a serious, savage hit on this, especially in this community.
---------------
"Impeachment, of course, is a matter of Constitutional law, not personal discretion on the part of individual lawmakers."
Hi Ron...
... thanks for the post. Yes, I may be new to blog on this site - but I do realize that many of you have been here for quite some time. I do, however, receive Mr. Conyers, newsletters and when I received and read his most recent - I was one of the first to post my comments under the heading "More Political Fraud?" (it was originally on page one of this discussion, but because of subsequent posts it has been pushed to page two). I have stayed engaged this week because I too thought there would be some positive changes coming and also because there have been myriad excellent posts made here in the past few days. Yet, I am surprised that this is the longest thread that many of you veterans have ever seen - hmmmm, there,s a message in that as well… isn,t there?
Now I posted the information regarding Butler Shaffer,s article, not because I think Butler is blaming the "active" citizens - but rather because of the apathy that undoubtedly exists amongst the masses and the naivety that exists amongst some of the active.
Let,s digress for a moment and examine the sixth paragraph of Mr. Conyers, most recent newsletter, and I quote:
"Having devoted a considerable amount of time and attention to detailing the many abuses of the Bush Administration, I firmly believe that we have brought these matters to the attention of the American people and the mainstream media, and that their verdict was reflected in the elections on November 7. I consider the now famous "basement hearings" and the issuance of my "Constitution in Crisis" Report to be among the watershed achievements of my more than forty years in Congress."
As used in politics, the term "watershed" is most often used to define any moment or event separating two distinct periods of time. In this case, we know that the Republicans have been in control of Congress during the previous 12 year period and, of course, any good politician wants his/her party in control - right? Well, it now appears to me that Rep Conyers, conducted his now famous "basement hearings" and issued his C in C report as merely a political stunt to shift the national divide in favor of the Democratic Party… and as he says… it worked as evidenced by the November 7th election results. Further, Conyers, exclaims that this preparatory work (not further investigations or articles of impeachment) to be "… among the watershed achievements of his more than forty years of Congress."
And then he has the audacity to say "I have agreed with Speaker-to-be Pelosi that impeachment is off the table… I have nothing but respect for those who might disagree, but that is where I come out." Wow - "… that is where I come out?" Does he mean that he has been hiding behind the pretence of working for his constituents and now he has "come out" and admits that he has never had any intention of pursuing justice for the people - but rather merely to help the Dems gain control of Congress?
If this is an accurate assessment of what the Congressman was conveying in his most recent newsletter, then the various posts claiming fraud, and being duped, deceived, and coned are right on the mark - aren't they?
In addition, it tends to validate Shaffer,s argument that it is "we the people" who are to blame for this out-of-control government because "we" continue to empower political criminals, liars, and deceivers by voting for them initially - but more self-condemning is the fact that we keep voting them back in (e.g. Conyers, will soon begin his 21st term).
By the way, has Rep Conyers ever replied to his constituents in any of his previous blogs?
I have a feeling that Conyers, Pelosi, Hoyer, and others now "in power" are just laughing at all of us and saying to themselves "this too shall pass."
P.S. Go ahead AngryDemocrat, Frosted Flake, Jewels (and other pissed-off bloggers) SCREAM & SWEAR! Please, however, make sure the target of your outrage is clearly in your sights.
Pissed off Bloggers...??
Well, Mr. Jackster,
I am very happy that you were able to discern the meaning of Conyer's words and glean all that from a couple of paragraphs.
But, you must have been supporting him, also, or you, as I, would not be receiving his newsletter! So if the shoe fits...??
Yes, I am guilty of apathy. Most Americans are. We live in one of the richest countries in the world. We enjoy more creature comforts then most any other nation. And then, our World was rocked, by a series of horrible events and the subsequent using of said events for the political furthering of a bunch of ruthless thugs! A bunch of over-reaching, unscrupulous, and sociopathic monsters. As I stated before, pardon my hyperbole, but words do not properly convey what I mean. Not even SCREAMING AND SWEARING! In making this statement, are you somehow placing yourself in the lofty position of knowing any better then the rest of us? Many of us feel duped. Yet, not all of us have worked as hard to NOT be duped. While I may not have frequented this blog, I have my own blog, and contribute written works to numerous others. I outlined my activism in another post. No need to be redundant here.
So, I ask...what is your point? Are you saying you are morally superior to the rest of us? Remember that old saying: when you point your finger, there are three pointing back at you. We, as I stated, are all guilty of complacancy and apathy. With few rare exceptions. If you are one of those rare exceptions, well, kudos to you! I, while maybe waking up more slowly, am certainly not ashamed of my efforts since my wakening! Once I realized the depths of the corruption and evil being perpetrated by this Regime, I risked much of what I have to fight them! I have read, and heard, often enough the threats of the shrub pertaining to anyone foolhardy enough to question him. We are "Terrorists." Why, even Cheney himself called a whole state 'Terrorists' for voting out Leiberman...who managed to vote himself right back in. More cronyism. And now Lamont is out.
No, I will accept no lecturing from you nor anyone else. As a single mother for almost 18 years, my life was one of struggling to survive, and did not lend itself to being anything but self-absorbing. Any other details are none of your-nor anyone else's concern. I woke up. And I put up (a fight) and I won't shut up! Capeesh?
No, I am not out to win friends, but definitely to influence people!!
So don't try to tell us you had the inside track on what Congressman Conyer's was up to. Or even intimate as such.
Jewels
BTW, I also risk tainting a very wonderful relationship by my continued activism. My S/O has been burned so many times by Politics he has zero tolerance for even the discussion of things political, let alone my political activities. And yes, he also votes. He simply becomes too angry to be as involved as I am; therefore, I keep it to myself.
J.
Morally superior?
… hardly. A rare exception to the apathy in this country? - sorry, wrong again. Although I am somewhat of a political activist, I realize that there are millions of people who put my efforts to shame.
Seems as though some of my posts have been misunderstood - though. As I "attempted" to convey above, there are myriad of excellent posts made on this blog in the past few days from people who are "actively" trying to figure out what Conyers is going to do now that the Dems will be in control of Congress.
And yes, I did support and applaud Conyers efforts to expose the superfluity of crimes perpetrated by Dubya and company. FYI - I feel like a political maverick in one of the reddist states in the union and therefore reach out to those who I hope will bring meaningful change at a national level. For now, however, I am afraid that all of us who voted for the Democrats (whether they won or lost) have just been duped, deceived, and used in a most unscrupulous manner.
I can also empathize with your conundrum. Just imagine living in a state where - after everything that has occurred during the last six years - over 70% of the local electorate still voted in a Republican state government from top to bottom - and then to think that the new Democratic Congress will likely do nothing about the current administration,s atrocities and that everything we believed and supported prior to the election was mere campaign rhetoric.
If you,ll take a moment to review my above post I think you,ll notice numerous "?" and realize that I asked more questions than made statements - right? Since we have yet to hear from Mr. Conyers, I, like nearly everyone else in this forum, am merely attempting to decipher his cunning message - but I will watch his actions more than listen to his words from here on out.
Point is - I no longer belive that Mr. Conyers or other entrenched incumbents are the ones who offer hope for resolution to our country,s problems; a very sad and long over due realization - don,t you think?
By the way, I was not making light of yours or anyone,s contributions to this blog when I said "Go ahead AngryDemocrat, Frosted Flake, Jewels (and other pissed-off bloggers) SCREAM & SWEAR! Please, however, make sure the target of your outrage is clearly in your sights." I was suggesting that the "target" of our collective anger should be aimed at Conyers, Pelosi, et al and not at those who are actively trying to change the direction of this country. Again, I apologize if I failed to communicate that effectively.
Sorry if my pragmatism offends you, but you just gotta know that Conyers and his staff are reading all these posts and laughing their asses off. Because somewhere along the line, American government became "of the elite" and not "of the people" - and they know that all too well.
As some say out west, we have been rode hard and put up wet!
Thank you for clarifying
Jackster.
I guess we are all a bit touchy as the treachory (?) of the Democrats was revealed. And yes, I too, am a pragmatist. I have the feeling that most of the "Electorate" are laughing their collective asses off at us! We must seem as 'ants on an anthill' to them, by now. They are so removed from our day-to-day reality that they can no longer comprehend what "reality" is!
Wth that, I will close. I have made my opinions and feelings QUITE clear on this forum. I will be monitoring it, but with less and less hope that Conyers would have the, as I put it-Cajones!-to answer our outraged posts! Another liar and manipulator.
I am beginnig to feel that all Politicians-like Lawyers (with a few exceptions, on the lawyer part) should be given concrete boots to wear...all the way to the bottom of the ocean!! I am just so damn tired!
So please accept my apology for misunderstanding your posted intentions. I KNOW where my anger and disappoinment are directed!
Hang Tough, all and do not ever give up!!
